I found an excellent, cheap and convenient material for the manufacture of large cases (for example, for a home ventilation installation).
A couple of weeks ago, I asked the @ammochat telegram chat why I was bringing several sheets of insulation from Leroy. Nobody guessed. )
XPS, also known as extruded polystyrene foam, it is also often called Penoplex (this is one of the brands that produces XPS) is available in sheets 20, 30, 40, 50, 100 mm thick, 585×1185 mm in size. This material is very convenient to use for the manufacture of cases. XPS 20 mm is best suited, in Leroy Merlin a sheet of such material costs only 138 rubles (here it is on the Leroy website ).
XPS cuts perfectly with a regular construction knife (the main thing is that the blade is new). I saw enough videos about thermal cutters on Youtube, I even made such a cutter from a soldering iron, but it turned out that it was completely unnecessary – it cuts faster with a knife and the edge is smoother.
Self-tapping screws can be used to fasten the sheets (it is important that the threads are as rare as possible, and the relief of the thread is as large as possible), I used black drywall screws and regular 4.5×35.
Self-tapping screws are easily tightened with a screwdriver, no pre-drilling is required. If you want to make the case more durable, you can glue the sheets with “liquid nails” and immediately tighten the screws.
The tricky design in the title photo is a new home-made “anti-crisis” installation of home supply ventilation based on a fan from a MAZ bus and a cabin filter from Lada Grant. I’ll finish everything soon and tell you about it.
