Italian goalkeeper Ivan Luca Vavassori, who fought for Ukraine against Russian invaders, decided to return to his homeland.
At the end of April, Ivan Luca Vavassori was wounded in the besieged Mariupol . He helped evacuate people from Mariupol and came under fire, as a result of which he was wounded in several places and did not get in touch for a long time.
A few days later, the goalkeeper reported that he managed to survive. After that, he announced that he was returning to Italy.
“I’ve had enough. It’s time to go back, I’m not ready to go further. I think I did everything possible to help, gave the Ukrainian people part of my time and life. But now I’m returning to where I’m happy. Much has changed since I left. However, I am sure that with the help of God I will achieve my goals,” the footballer wrote in his Instagram story.
Vavassori was born in Russia but was adopted as a child by an Italian family. He played for a number of Italian clubs (Alcione, Legnano, Pro Patria), and after a full-scale Russian invasion, he flew to defend Ukraine.
Earlier, TSN Prosport reported that the 13-year-old Ukrainian dedicated the victory in the elite boxing tournament to the Ukrainian Armed Forces .
