According to the doctor Lidia Babich, there is one type of prolonged jaundice – breast milk jaundice. We deal with the timing and course of jaundice in babies.
First of all, you need to make sure that there are no problems (infections, underweight, congenital malformations of the biliary tract), writes pediatrician Lydia Babich , talking about jaundice in newborns.
There is one type of prolonged jaundice – breast milk jaundice. Mother’s milk contains substances that contribute to a longer jaundice.
It will be a plump, plump baby who looks healthy. But there is jaundice. The good news is that it is safe,” the doctor notes.
Rarely, bilirubin is so high that it requires phototherapy.
Do I need phototherapy for jaundice, we determine according to the schedule
It is in the updated clinical protocol for neonatal jaundice (see photo).
“There we see that after 120 hours of life, the bilirubin figure is 350. If the bilirubin is below 350, FT is not shown,” says Lydia Babich.
Does it need to be mixed?
This is an outdated recommendation. It can really stop jaundice, the doctor notes.
“But… A baby after 3-5 days of bottle feeding may not return to the breast. Feeding with formula carries many risks for the baby’s health (abdominal pain, spitting up, allergies, restless behavior, protest when feeding). Yes, there are children who eat formula and everything is OK – you say. And these children really exist. But now we are not talking about that. The risk of losing breastfeeding is great, “says the doctor.
Is there a risk from mild jaundice?
There is no risk at all, the doctor replies.
Don’t stop breastfeeding because of jaundice.
Also, do not treat jaundice as follows:
- sorbents;
- “Ukrlivom”, “Ursofalk”;
- drinking glucose;
- “Galstenay”, “Hepel” (according to the doctor, homeopathy does not cure anything at all);
- sun rays through the window.
The Ministry of Health has also prepared an information monument about:
- how to avoid the spread of infectious diseases if you are in a temporary shelter;
- What to look out for when arranging a safe place to hide.
