The First Lady of the United States spoke at the opening of the Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 2. This event traditionally sets the theme for the Met Gala, which is the premier costume ball in the United States.
Before the public, Jill Biden appeared in a floral dress from Tom Ford with blue and yellow flowers. And in her speech, the first lady touched upon the importance and spoke about its significance in politics, while recalling Ukraine and her recent outfit with a sunflower.
“I ordered a sunflower appliqué – the flower of Ukraine and a symbol of hope and solidarity – and sewed one on the cuffs of my dress. It was small, but shone against the deep cobalt blue of my sleeve. And that night, sitting next to the ambassador of Ukraine , I knew I was sending a message without saying a word: Ukraine is in our hearts – and that we support them,” the first lady said.
She also noted that this week she will travel to Romania and Slovakia to meet with Ukrainian families who were forced to flee the war to neighboring countries. During the trip, Biden will also meet with US military personnel, US embassy staff, aid workers and educators who help educate Ukrainian displaced children.
Recall that in addition to the dress that Biden spoke about, a sunflower was also embroidered on her protective mask.
