According to the newspaper Politico, citing four European diplomats, as part of the sixth package of sanctions, the European Commission plans to disable the international payment system SWIFT Russian banks Moscow Credit Bank (MCB) and Rosselkhozbank.
The source also confirms previous reports that these restrictions will affect Sberbank, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously suggested.
The sanctions against these banks follow previous EU decisions to cut off other Russian financial companies from SWIFT. The goal is to increase economic pressure on Moscow against the backdrop of the situation in Ukraine.
The sixth package of sanctions against Russia will also affect the Russian oil industry. Details on the package are expected to be announced on Wednesday, i.e. today, with EU ambassadors to discuss the proposals later in the day.
Earlier, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell , said that the EU would expand the list of Russian banks that would be disconnected from the SWIFT system with the sixth package of sanctions . VTB, Otkritie, Novikombank and Sovcombank, which are disconnected from SWIFT, have already fallen under blocking sanctions.
