In a zoom interview, the singer confessed how he saved his family from Kherson, spoke about the attitude of the Ukrainian military towards him, his first impressions of training and the greatest disappointment in life.
Max Barskikh gave an interview to the American edition of Rolling Stone . The artist spoke about the war in Ukraine. He, like every Ukrainian, to the last did not believe in the possibility of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“We live in the 21st century, and no one could have thought that this would happen. A few days after February 24, I decided to talk to my Russian audience through social networks and share everything that happens. 100% truth, seen with my own eyes. To which “I received a lot of hateful comments, messages from once beloved fans and death wishes for me and the entire nation. And it was one of the biggest disappointments of my life, to be honest,” Barskikh told the publication.
With the outbreak of war, the very first thing the singer did was to take his family out of the still unoccupied Kherson to a safer place.
“I decided to gather all my family members and send them abroad. And on the way we already passed Russian military equipment and gunfire. Madness. It was like some kind of damn movie. I didn’t sleep for two days in a row while driving. On the third day, I felt like I was intoxicated. As time goes by, you start to get used to this whole situation in the country – it’s terrible!” Max said.
Returning to Kyiv, the singer decided to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a reservist and begin military training. Regarding whether life has changed since then and whether he feels a difference in relation to his brothers, Max says:
“I don’t feel like a celebrity. I’m just an ordinary Ukrainian. But the soldiers are very supportive. At first they took pictures with me and said, ‘OK, we have everyone in our team, and people from the [music] industry are now going into military service. And this is very inspiring for Ukrainian guys.
It’s a big change, but you know what – I like it. And it teaches you not to forget that you are first and foremost a person. The commander told me, “It’s your choice. You don’t have to be here one hundred percent of the time.” But it was my decision.
When asked by a journalist if he had learned to use a weapon, Max replied that he devotes 70 percent of his time to training. And he admits that he is not sure if he is ready to kill someone. But if it is necessary to defend the Motherland and his people, he will do it.
Recall that Barskikh received an invitation to perform at Billboard MusicCon, which will be held May 13-14 in Las Vegas. At the panel, named after his song Don’t Fuck with Ukraine!, the musician will give a speech in which he will tell the international audience about what is happening in Ukraine right now.
