Starlink launches "Portability" service for connecting Internet terminals on cars - for an additional $25 per month

The space Internet from Starlink was made mobile with the introduction of the new Portability function. Starlink subscribers can now take the antenna to any location with internet coverage, enabling connectivity in locations that are likely never to be covered by 5G.

Message from the editor: Our defenders from the 3rd separate battalion of the UDA, who are in the Zaporozhye region, need things to resist the enemy: quadrocopters and smartphones to control them, night vision sights. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk told one happy user, “Starlink is an amazing solution for RVs, campers, and connectivity away from cities.”

Starlink does not officially support the use of antennas while driving, but is said to be working on a solution for moving vehicles. Musk has tweeted about working on energy efficiency, allowing the station to plug into a 12V car cigarette lighter and keep the signal going. Such adapters have already been tested in Ukraine .

Energy consumption is the main factor when you stay overnight and live off your car battery. The Starlink station consumes 60-70 watts, which is an improvement over the 80-100 watts it used just a year ago.

Starlink adds that this service may not provide the speeds that users with registered service addresses get.

“When you move Starlink to a new location, this prioritization can lead to poor quality of service, especially during periods of peak or congestion on the network.”

Space Internet customers can already add the service on the account page and immediately activate it. This will cost an additional $25 each month on top of the monthly subscription starting at $110 and the one-time purchase of the Starlink bundle for $599.
