We digress and dream about a new car: test drive Renault Captur TSE 155

This material was planned to be released exactly at the end of February, but did not come out for all known reasons. However, sometimes it is necessary to distract from the war (do not confuse with the concept of “relax” – this is just not necessary to do), sometimes it is useful to dream and even plan your future steps after our victory. Perhaps, for someone, one of these steps will be the purchase of a new car. And perhaps that car will be the Renault Captur.

Glory to Ukraine!

So, here is an addition to the previous Renault Captur review : the most powerful version of the car with a 155-horsepower engine, also in the maximum INTENSE configuration, fell into our hands. Will this compact crossover be able to sparkle with new colors? We are looking for answers to the TOP 5 most important questions around the Renault Captur TCe 155 – let’s go!

How to visually identify the most powerful version of the car?

Regarding the crossover from the previous review, this test Renault Captur differs only in color (here choose according to your liking) and rims. Which, surprisingly, even look a little simpler than on the last 130-horsepower car. It’s a pity that this is so – the maximum version of the Renault Captur would clearly benefit from bright distinctive details: dual exhaust, glossy black decor instead of chrome, luxurious wheels …

And it’s not to say that the new generation of the Renault Captur crossover looks bad. I love those soft lines, the C-shaped headlights and taillights, the practical plastic trims. But it is for the most powerful version – I would like to get some noticeable details in appearance. Oh, I remember how noticeably different Honda HR-V Sport !

The new generation of Renault Captur looks nice: soft shapes soothe, chrome molding emphasizes the 2-color body color, and mirror covers nicely cast off the evening sun. But for the TOP version, you want more – a double exhaust instead of a standard single pipe, various spoiler pads, rear disc brakes.

It’s the same with the interior: the already known shape of the front panel, the already familiar seat-armchairs, the already familiar “automatic” lever on the pedestal. Where is the red line? Where are the seats with developed lateral support? Where is the sports steering wheel? Oh, I remember the Ford Puma ST-Line interior: having only “100+ horses” under the hood, that crossover managed to look like all 200…

However, even the maximum version of the Renault Captur is just a Renault Captur. Although in general everything seems to be good. After all, inside you are greeted by a beautiful LCD instrument panel, soft plastic on the front panel, background interior lighting, a rear sofa with the possibility of longitudinal movement. There is only one global remark to the cabin – I want more space and space, especially in the back. But there are no comments on the trunk: a normal volume for its class, well-thought-out little things to improve practicality.

This salon is already familiar and it is quite normal for a crossover of this class: finishing materials, comfortable fit, ergonomics. General remark – I would like to add space. A note to this particular maximum powerful version – I would like to add bright distinctive details.

But there are changes in the movement, right?

Yes, I have. Under the hood is a 1.3 TCe engine known under the code H5Ht (the designations HR13DDT and M282 are also found), and in this case this engine is presented in a forced 155-horsepower modification. And this, if not radically, but noticeably changes the picture regarding the 130-horsepower version of the Renault Captur.

And now I’m talking not only about starts from a standstill, although even when accelerating from 0-100 km / h, the car wins a noticeable second (measured below). But I’m also talking about accelerating on the go: the test 155-horsepower Renault Captur seems to have become lighter and more agile, and it simply responds to the accelerator pedal more “alive”! Pleasant acceleration is backed up by “seamless” gear shifts: the preselective EDC robotic transmission works quickly and accurately. Frankly, there were moments when the “automatic” seemed to be late with switching up, but these are a few cases for a weekly test drive several hundred kilometers long.

And the test car was presented on winter tires. Same wheel size, same crossover, but the experience is different. Winter tires brightened up the work of the chassis a little, the car became softer on small things and when driving through a series of bumps. Again, there is no need to talk about any cardinal change in character. But the result is noticeable – and it is clearly directed to the better.

An already well-known motor is installed under the hood, but in a forced 155-horsepower version: acceleration from 0-100 km / h fits in 8.5 seconds – this is even a little better than the passport. Moreover, the result was obtained on winter tires, which also had a positive effect on the perception of driving comfort. And speaking in general, the character of the car can be changed using the MySense system : make the steering wheel harder or select an “eco” mode to save fuel. But even in standard settings it turned out well: in the city 8-9 liters per 100 km, on the highway at a speed of 80-90 km / h – consumption of 4.5-5 liters per 100 km, at a speed of 110-120 km / h – about 6-6.5 liters per 100 kilometers.

What about the price for such a car?

In the case of the Renault Captur crossover, Ukrainian buyers were offered only two versions of the car, which differ in engines and equipment. Prices are indicated according to the price list, which was valid at the end of April.

Start gives Renault Captur ZEN : 130-horsepower engine, 7-speed. EDC-automatic, ESP and ABS systems, six airbags, Full LED headlights, 1-zone climate control, light and rain sensors, cruise control, heated front seats, key card, movable rear sofa, light alloy 17- inch wheels, Easy Link multimedia and 7-inch display, etc. Price – from 653 thousand UAH. or about $20 thousand .

An alternative is Renault Captur INTENSE , where the following is added: 155-horsepower engine, rear-view camera, electric parking brake, heated steering wheel, digital instrument panel based on a 7-inch LCD display, navigation, 2-color body color and mirrors in the color of the roof , etc. Price – from 727 thousand UAH. or $22 thousand.

The Renault Captur crossover is “everything in the package”: full LED headlights and a light sensor, paddle shifters for the “machine”, a modern multimedia system, navigation and a rear view camera, touch-sensitive door opening and a key card.

What do competitors offer?

Since this material is dedicated specifically to the powerful 155-horsepower version in the maximum configuration, we choose rivals to match: engines for 150 “horses”, the ability to drive 0-100 km / h in about 8.5 seconds, good equipment.

The closest rivals are Peugeot 2008 , Suzuki Vitara , SKODA Kamiq cars : comparable sizes and power in top versions. The “Frenchman” stands out for its interesting design, pleasant driving habits, advanced equipment, but the 155-horsepower car turns out to be noticeably more expensive than the Renault crossover. “Japanese” is good with all-wheel drive, a micro-hybrid based on a powerful 1.4-liter turbo engine, as well as a nice price. It is difficult to argue with him, but it is possible due to the age of the car: one of the “oldest” cars in this class. Finally, the “Czech” takes spaciousness in the cabin and practicality in detail. But at the moment, the 150-horsepower version is not presented in the price list of the model, and even when it was presented, it still turned out to be more expensive than Renault, while losing in some configuration points. Let’s see what will happen in the future.

As a result, it turned out that among the cars of this class you can find quite powerful options, but it is this Renault Captur that offers the most power for the least money. Plus, it adds a good bundle: the price difference with the closest competitors is $ 1-2 thousand, taking into account equipment and options.

In the end: buy or not?

It is still difficult to call Renault Captur a revelation in the class: it’s just a modern compact crossover “for every day”, it’s just another “player” in its segment. But, frankly, the 155-horsepower version was able to significantly improve the perception of the model!

A powerful engine fills the car with pleasant dynamics, which can please every time you start from a traffic light or ensure safety when overtaking. A sort of highlight of the car, which distinguishes it from competitors, and against the background of the 130-horsepower version. Moreover, for the corresponding surcharge, you get not only a more powerful engine, but also an extended package. Therefore, if you are interested in buying a Renault Captur, then be sure to pay attention to the TSe 155 INTENSE version – it’s worth it.
