“This role and the series means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors treated this unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care,” Gatwa said in a statement to the BBC. “I will do my best to do the same.”
The Scottish actor previously played Eric Effiong in the Netflix comedy series Sex Education and will also star alongside Margot Robbie in the upcoming film Barbie. Gatwa would be the first black actor to play the Doctor since Doctor Who in 1963.

In turn, Jodie Whittaker became the first woman to play the Doctor. She joined the cast in 2017. In keeping with series tradition, Whittaker would appear in the final episode, which would introduce Gatwa as the Fourteenth Doctor. This episode is expected to premiere later this year to coincide with the BBC’s 100th anniversary.
The Doctor is a humanoid member of the Time Lord race who can travel through space and time using the TARDIS machine. He is able to take on another form during the process of “regeneration” when the character is faced with mortal danger. This serves as a plot device for passing the baton between the lead actors.
