Nintendo report: 107 million Switch sold, $13 billion in annual revenue, over 30 million Pokémon games

Nintendo released its sales report for the fiscal year ending March 31st, which showed $13 billion in revenue. This is less than $13.48 billion a year earlier . This can be attributed to the shortage of semiconductors and the large sales of the Animal Crossing game in 2020, which makes such a difference in comparison.

Analysts had expected Nintendo to post $3.34 billion in revenue for its fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31. For the full year, analysts had expected revenue of $16.59 billion.

Also, full-year operating income was $4.54 billion, down from $4.91 billion a year earlier. Profit attributable to the owners of the parent company was $3.66 billion compared to $3.68 billion a year earlier.

Switch sales topped 107.6 million pieces of equipment, with total sales surpassing that of the Wii console.

In the fourth fiscal quarter ending March 31, Nintendo shipped 4.1 million Switch consoles, which means the company sold 23.1 million units for the entire fiscal year. This is in line with the revised target of 23 million, but down 20% from last year due to semiconductor shortages.

Nintendo plans to ship 21 million Switch consoles in the new fiscal year, but revenue and operating profit are forecast to decline. This could mean that the Switch cycle may have reached its peak. Nintendo expects to sell 210 million units of software this year, up from 235 million the previous year.

The company is expecting software results from the Nintendo Switch Sports game (released in April) as well as the scheduled releases of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in July and Splatoon 3 in September. Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are expected to debut in late 2022.

But one of the most successful was Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which sold 12.6 million units during the quarter and sold more than 30 million copies of the games in the series in a year.

The recently released “Pokémon Legends: Arceus” and “Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl” were top sellers for the brand. The former sold 12.64 million copies and the latter sold 14.65 million, an impressive feat for the series, propelling the Pokémon series to 27 million in one year.

But in addition, 3.18 million additional copies of “Pokémon Sword and Shield”, 2.4 million copies of “New Pokémon Snap” and 1.25 million copies of “Let’s Go, Pikachu/Eevee” came to the rescue of the series.

Another bestseller, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, sold over 2.1 million copies in its first two weeks of release. The Switch exclusive debuted on March 25. This is Kirby’s first 3D platform game.

The latest entry in the franchise, the 2018 2D side-scroller Kirby Star Allies, has sold approximately 3.42 million copies as of December 31, 2020. These numbers may seem small compared to what franchises like Pokémon can do, but Kirby has always been a more modest series.

Overall, for the next fiscal year, Nintendo expects revenue of $12.27 billion, operating profit of $3.84 billion and profit attributable to owners of the parent company of $2.61 billion.
