Since the beginning of a full-scale war, artists from many countries have expressed support for our country, but yesterday, May 10, at the main music show in Europe, a group from Iceland did it very touchingly.
On May 10, the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 took place, in which representatives of 17 countries took part. Many of the participants supported our country, appearing at the competition with a blue and yellow flag, but the representatives of Iceland, the Systur team, especially distinguished themselves.
According to the show’s commentator Timur Miroshnichenko, at the end of the dress rehearsal, the girls shouted from the Stand With Ukraine!
Therefore, the team decided to show their support in a different way – one of the Systur participants stuck two stripes on her hand – blue and yellow, which symbolized the flag of Ukraine.
Also on the day of the live performance, the band posted a message on their Instagram page, posting our flag, a heart-shaped emoji, and the inscription “This heart is for you, Ukraine.”
Therefore, it seems that the finale of the performance, where the girls folded their hands in a heart above their heads, was also addressed to us. It was very touching.
A day earlier, one of the members of the Systur team appeared at the opening of Eurovision with the flag of our country.
They also covered the already legendary “Stefania” by the Kalush Orchestra and said: “We love you and we have not forgotten.”
By the way, the Systur group is actually a family affair, since all members of the group are sisters. The girls’ names are Sigridur, Elisabeth and Elin Eytorsdóttir, and they started their creative career in 2011 as part of the group Sísý Ey, named after their grandmother. But music has always been in their lives, since their parents are famous musicians: their mother is singer Ellen Kristiansdottir, and their father is composer and keyboardist Heitor Gunnarsson from the Mezzoforte band. In addition to the music, Sigridur, Elisabeth and Elin are activists for the rights of transgender people, especially with regard to transgender children, which is why they repeatedly posed with a transgender flag at the competition.
At the Eurovision final, the girls sang the song Með Hækkandi Sól (“With Sunrise”), and their brother Heitor played the drums.
