Future folding devices may move away from the current single-fold design in favor of double-fold or both inward and outward folding solutions. Or manufacturers will be able to produce devices with expanding displays. This flexibility will be provided by new folding screen technologies that Samsung Display and LG Display showcased at the annual Display Week conference.

LG Display showed off an 8-inch foldable touchscreen that can fold in and out. This allows a single foldable display to serve as both an internal screen (as in the Galaxy Z Fold 3) and an external display (as in the Huawei Mate XS). Devices equipped with this “360-degree foldable OLED display” can avoid the need to have both an internal and external display in favor of one large screen. Such a screen is able to withstand bending “more than 200,000 times”, and a special structure avoids wrinkles. The resolution is 2480×2200 pixels.
Samsung Display showed Flex G and Flex S displays that can be folded twice. In the case of the Flex G, they fold twice in the same direction, while the Flex S folds once inward and once outward. And Samsung Display showed a couple of phones with a retractable display design. Their screens can be rotated horizontally or vertically.
At the same time, renderings of the future foldable smartphone Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 have appeared on the network. It will not yet receive the new products shown by Samsung Display, but will retain the design inherent in its predecessor. According to available information, the device will receive a 6.2-inch display on the outer panel and a 7.6-inch foldable internal display. The device has a redesigned rear camera configuration that is inspired by the Galaxy S22 Ultra version.

It is reported that the selfie camera will be located under the internal display. However, the 2022 version will boast improved performance. There are three cameras on the back panel. Their characteristics have not yet been disclosed. There is no slot for the S-Pen stylus in the body of the device, although another source previously claimed that it will appear in the foldable 2022 model.
The announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 smartphone is expected in August or September this year.
