One of the main novelties of the Google I / O 2022 conference was the new Google phone – Pixel 6a. It’s the third and most affordable model in the Pixel 6 family, which launched last fall. From older brothers, the newcomer inherited the Google Tensor chipset and design, while becoming even more compact: the diagonal of the Pixel 6a OLED display is 6.1 “- even less than the Pixel 5a offered. But its refresh rate, alas, is modest: 60 Hz. The set of cameras includes a 12-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel wide and an 8-megapixel front camera, placed in a hole in the center of the screen.
For the sake of compactness, I had to sacrifice a battery, the capacity of which is 4410 mAh – however, this is still much more than in the 6.1 “iPhone 13 (3227 mAh) and iPhone 13 Pro Max (4352 mAh). Like the older Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, the newcomer received stereo speakers, an under-screen finger scanner and a bunch of unique software AI chips like Magic Eraser (removing unwanted objects in the picture), Real Tone (correct skin tone display) and many others.
The Pixel 6a software is based on Android 12, and the software update roadmap includes 3 Android version updates and 5 years of security updates. The Pixel 6a will be available in white, black and green for the same price as the Pixel 5a – $449. But the start of sales will have to wait: the collection of pre-orders starts only on July 21.
