MediaTek, apparently inspired by the gadget-spam strategy of Chinese companies, decided to apply it to a range of chipsets. The company unexpectedly presented three new 6nm solutions at once: Dimensity 1050, Dimensity 930 and Helio G99. The older Dimensity 1050 is notable for being the company’s first chipset to support millimeter-wave (mmWave) 5G networks and frequencies below 6 GHz. At the same time, from the point of view of architecture, it does not look like either Dimensity 1000 or 1100 (consisting of 4 powerful and 4 energy-efficient cores), but rather a modification of Dimensity 920: the Dimensity 1050 is based on a pair of Cortex-A78 (2.5 GHz) and six Cortex-A55 (2.0 GHz) with the new Mali-G610 MC3 video core, similar to the Mali-G610 MC6 in Dimensity 8000/8100.
The chipset supports FHD+ screens up to 144Hz and cameras up to 108MP, as well as 4K@30fps video recording. The first smartphones based on it will go on sale in the third quarter of 2022.
The second novelty of the day was the Dimensity 930, a curious feature of which was the rejection of the Mali graphics core in favor of the IMG BXM-8-256. The chip has the same set of CPU cores as the Dimensity 920 (2x Cortex-A78 and 6x Cortex-A55), however, a couple of powerful ones have frequencies reduced from 2.5 to 2.2 GHz. And, despite the higher figure relative to Dimensity 920, the new product can no longer boast of either recording or even playing 4K videos, limiting itself to 2K @ 30fps in both cases. At the same time, the first solutions based on Dimensity 930 are promised by the end of June.
Finally, the MediaTek Helio G99 was also presented – a 4G solution, the main advantage of which over the G96 is a 30% reduction in power consumption while increasing the frequency of powerful Cortex-A76 cores from 2.05 to 2.2 GHz. There are no other major differences, with the exception of the transition from 12 to 6 nm, between the chips. The chipset will enter the market in the third quarter of 2022.
