Social network Instagram * has announced a big “brand update”, essentially refreshing some of its marketing materials and slightly tweaking the logos. However, there is also a rather important change – the company has decided to widely use its own exclusive Instagram * Sans fonts in both marketing and applications.
Instagram * Sans is said to be inspired by the Instagram * logo, and the font itself reflects the company’s commitment to “simplicity and art”. To a large extent, inspiration was drawn from the combination of rectangles and circles, which Instagram * , combining the English meanings of these words, calls squircles (a combination of the words squares and circles – rectangles and circles).
Most of the Instagram * font samples are actually done in screen-readable sans-serif sans-serif style. Instagram * said the company worked with linguists to find the best option that would display well in as many languages as possible, including as unusual as Thai or Japanese.
If in some fonts the letters are distinguished only by individual unusual elements, then in Instagram * Sans Script individual characters look really unusual, while maintaining pleasing shapes. At the same time, some combinations of characters do not look like classical letters at all.
The main thing is that this typeface Instagram * has a special identity. In particular, the company expects users to try out fonts in Stories and Reels, in which subtitles and captions written in Sans Script cannot be confused with TikTok videos. As vertical videos become the norm, there is a trend towards social media typography being averaged, so a new design solution will bring the picture to life.
The main question still remains how users will perceive the new design. At Meta * , which has experienced multiple user riots related to social network interface redesigns, no one knows the impact changes can have on user experience. Maybe that’s why Instagram * is starting to introduce design changes very gradually. However, users probably shouldn’t be surprised that squircles are about to become ubiquitous.
