She was named Ms Harris’ chief spokesperson after the pair’s election win last year.
She gave no reason for her exit in a farewell note to staff, but said she was grateful to Ms Harris and her chief of staff, Tina Flournoy.
“Every day, I arrived to the White House complex knowing our work made a tangible difference for Americans. I am immensely grateful and will miss working for her and with all of you,” she
said.
A spokesperson for Ms Harris said: “Symone has served honorably for three years. The president and vice-president are grateful for Symone’s service and advocacy for this administration. She is a valued member of the White House and a team player – she will be missed”.
Anita Dunn, a close friend of Mr Biden, suggested Ms Sanders may be in need of “a break” after working for Mr Biden and Ms Harris for three years.
Ms Sanders has made no secret of her ambition, writing in her 2020 memoir that she aspired to be the White House press secretary.
Bakari Sellers, a friend of Ms Sanders, has previously suggested she was “stung” by Mr Biden’s decision to make Jen Psaki to the role.
