“Whether you’re staying at a downtown luxury hotel in Cairo, out in the bush on safari in Kenya, or on an island in the Maldives – if you can get there, we can get there. It makes the whole process a little less scary.”
The US-based company claims it is offering a unique safety-net as other medical evacuation services require passengers to be hospitalised first, while it only asks for a positive test result and one mild symptom. This is particularly pertinent to Covid, which varies hugely in terms of severity but where all cases are treated with extreme caution.
However, those expecting a plush private-jet-style service may be disappointed. The luxury here is the ability to be picked up within hours and see out your quarantine in the comfort of your own home.
Mr Thompson explains: “We use registered, certified air ambulances and all of our operations are done under the supervision of our medical director and then a flight doctor. It all has to be done in a very particular way for governments to allow it.”
As we know, governments around the world have diverged wildly in their pandemic responses, slamming borders shut and enacting draconian rules at any moment in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus. However, this has not hindered Covac Global’s ability to rescue clients and it has now completed close to 100 evacuations.“We’ve never turned anyone down. We’ve always been able to get people back home.”
Evacuations have taken place in the likes of Croatia, Uganda, the Bahamas, Peru and Thailand. Some destinations are trickier to navigate than others but “we can intervene on our members behalf, because most governments would much rather have you depart the country as long as it’s in a safe manner,” says Mr Thompson.
