UK’s rarest cars: 1984 Nissan Laurel, one of only five left on British roads

In the early 1980s, the Laurel was the largest form of Nissan frequently seen on British roads. The 2.8-litre 280C was mostly seen only in brochures, but the C31 might be encountered as an airport taxi or hire car. Its main selling points were dependability, vast quantities of standard equipment and a definite Pan Pacific style. Today, Melissa Jardine owns one of only five examples still on the road.

The original C30-series Laurel made its bow in 1968, bridging the gap between the Bluebird and Cedric ranges. Nissan introduced the fourth generation (now with the designation C31) in 1980, with British buyers offered a choice of 2.0- or 2.4-litre models. The latter boasted a positively decadent array of fittings: a stereo radio-cassette player, electrically-powered windows, door mirrors and antenna, adjustable steering and alloy wheels.

The publicity claimed the C31 was designed “not just to impress you and your passengers”, but this was a significant reason for choosing a Laurel rather than a Vauxhall Carlton. Equally importantly, any Ford Granada L-driving neighbour would be mesmerised by the remote control for the boot and fuel filler. Above all, for £8,499, the Nissan owner gained a comfortable saloon capable of transporting them to their next business meeting without fear of breaking down en route.

The C32 model replaced the C31 in 1984. Five years later, Ms. Jardine’s father considered purchasing a light green metallic 1982 Laurel Automatic. She recalls: “The 10-year-old me was hooked, and I begged him to buy it. I loved that car from day one to when it was sold in 1993. This caused a sulky teenager to fall out with my dad for a few days for selling it, and from that day, I said I WILL buy one, one day!”
