Jes Staley, the former chief executive of Barclays, has bought a $13.2m (£10m) property in the Hamptons shortly before quitting the bank over an investigation into his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Mr Staley, who is moving back to the US from London, bought the 2.6 acre property in Long Island, New York, with his wife Debora. The couple has also listed a separate property in Long Island for sale for $12.9m.

The executive acted as Epstein’s private banker between 2000 and 2013 at his previous employer JP Morgan. The Financial Conduct Authority has been investigating whether Mr Staley and Barclays accurately described his relationship with Epstein, a convicted sex offender, when he became chief executive of the bank. 

The watchdog is expected to publish an outline of its findings soon. Staley left Barclays to contest its conclusions and has hired the high-profile lawyer Kathleen Harris, who works for US law firm Arnold & Porter and previously acted for Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation in the phone hacking scandal. 

Mr Staley’s new 12,400 sq ft property has a sunken tennis court and pool, according to real estate publication Dirt.com. The property was listed by Pat Petrillo at Sotheby’s.

Barclays has said it will pay the cost of Staley’s move to America.

The property Mr Staley is selling is a five-bedroom house in Southampton Village. The listing for the house describes the home as “the perfect place to enjoy a blissful escape”. He also owns a property on New York’s Park Avenue.

Mr Staley stayed in touch with Epstein until shortly before joining Barclays in 2015, seven years after Epstein was convicted of soliciting a child for prostitution. He has denied all knowledge of Mr Epstein’s crimes. The banker visited Epstein during his 13-month prison sentence in 2008 and again on a boat trip with his wife, where they sailed to Epstein’s retreat in the Caribbean.
