Marcelo Bielsa: ‘I am not unsackable – but I will not walk away from Leeds’

Marcelo Bielsa has insisted he is not “immune” from the sack at Leeds but will not walk away from his role at Elland Road.

The Argentinian coach, 66, has six months left on the rolling deal he signs every summer and has vowed to see out the campaign.

But he says his job is as much under scrutiny as any other Premier League manager, despite his hero status at the club for leading them back into the top flight.

His team have a mounting injury crisis and have conceded 10 goals in their last two games, including Tuesday’s 7-0 defeat at Manchester City which was the club’s joint-worst defeat.

“Do you think there is a coach that can’t be sacked, that is unsackable? Do you think I am so vain that I don’t think I can be sacked?” he said, when asked about his future.

“Do you think that after suffering a 7-0 defeat, I can discard the instability? The job of the coach is not stable. I don’t have anything that makes me immune from that characteristic.

“After losing 7-0, that is the situation I have to live through. That is a description of the circumstances.”

Bielsa’s injury concerns have deepened with Dan James picking up an adductor problem during the defeat at City.

The Wales forward, 24, was substituted at half-time at the Etihad Stadium and joins Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford and Liam Cooper on the sidelines after recent injuries.

Bielsa, though, still believes he can take the club forward.

“To say I have taken them as far as I can would suggest it’s a closed cycle. Of course, I am going to continue fighting,” he said.

“I always thinks with adversity you have to fight. You never know if the strength is going to be enough and what is the progression of the difficulties that we’ve come up against.

“But I am going to fight until the end of the season without any doubts. I hope nothing happens that does not allow me to act what I just said.”
