Hampstead Heath tends to be the busiest walking venue in north London. Hollow Ponds, which is a few miles to the east and in Leytonstone, is just as nice thanks to its tranquil waters and wizened oaks. It’s in London, so it’s hardly a wilderness walk, but it’s underrated.

Thornham Estate, Suffolk
This is a particularly fine area of rural Suffolk with an abundance of interesting buildings, bridges, water and woodland. The village of Thornham Magna is steeped in history and was mentioned in the Magna Carta; some of its oak-beamed farmhouses date back 600 years. The Thornham Estate has signposted several walks around its grounds – there are enough pathways for it not to feel crowded.
