There are, however, a few items that I can’t help but hanker after. Flared black stretch leggings is an example, as are baggy cargo pants – specifically ones with standout stitching and that funny loop at the back for dangling a keyring, which back in the day, would have been a springy green neon one. I’m not the only one either.
The fashion re-sale site Depop is currently seeing a huge spike in demand for vintage cargo pants and combat trousers, with a 70% increase in searches over the last six months.
I also recently indulged in a Fiorucci mini pink handbag complete with retro angels, which takes me right back to my clubbing days, when the only girl I wanted to be was Chloe Sevigny. I sort of still do.
“What if people think you’ve never actually come out of this style? It may look like you’ve been stuck in the year 2000 for twenty years,” opined a close friend of mine.
She has a point, as does my daughter who cunningly suggested that the happy memories associated with some of my favourite ‘wish list’ items are too precious to rekindle. She’s banned me from purchasing anything at all from Urban Outfitters, including sparkly socks, the only thing I could get into anyway.
Happily, she’s approved of my latest longing: a velvet emerald green jumpsuit with dainty cap sleeves by Peachy Den, a nascent Peckham-based label with heavy leanings towards my favourite fashion decade. “Millennial fashion is mischievous and playful and that’s what we stand for,” says brand founder Isabella Weatherby.
“We are impacted by the sultry grunge mood of Y2k fashion like baggy trousers and tight tops. These silhouettes are all about frivolity and not taking yourself too seriously,” she adds, which sounds like the perfect antidote to the pandemic era.
Melika Imoru, Head of Womenswear Design at ASOS, suggests that the current noughties flashback is going from strength to strength, too: “Social media, celebrity style and music have all played a part in the resurgence of YK2 styles.
Our teams have looked to everything from the prints and accessories to the music videos and key designers from the era, as well as key trends from the period including thrift, customized and grunge fashions – to create modern-day collections consisting of essential fits such as kick flare leggings, bucket hats, wide leg denim, hipster jeans and crop tops.”
