Questor: stocks to buy for your children this Christmas

The pandemic has done the shares no favours and they stand 36pc below where we tipped them in August 2018 and no higher than in December 2012. But there’s a lot to be said for buying at the point of maximum pessimism.

More perhaps for girls would be shares in luxury or fashion firms. Questor first tipped Hermès in September 2019 and the share price has since risen by a pleasing 146pc. We took another look in July this year and have notched up a gain of 26.1pc since then; at the same time we advised readers to avoid Burberry, which has lost 14.7pc since then.

Hermès bears out one of this column’s long-standing beliefs, that businesses that make high returns on capital will produce reliable gains for readers. The Paris-listed firm was making returns on capital of 57.1pc at the time of our first tip, which we described as a “phenomenal” number.

Athletic children – or perhaps those who just like trainers – may want to own a stake in Nike. We tipped the New York-listed shares in June last year on the strength of their addition to the popular and successful Fundsmith Equity fund and they have risen by 63.6pc since.

We have also recommended a few video games stocks, including Team17 and TinyBuild, as well as Prosus, an Amsterdam-listed company that owns a big stake in Tencent, the maker of Fortnight.

Shares in Team17 have more than tripled since our tip in April 2019, but those in TinyBuild have shed 29.2pc since April this year while Prosus is 11.6pc down relative to our tip in September last year. The weakness of the latter two stocks may present a buying opportunity.

Few teenagers take no interest in music and the stock market offers ways to take a financial interest too. The Hipgnosis Songs fund is a London-listed investment trust that owns the rights to the works of an enormous range of artists. We first tipped the shares almost three years ago and they have made a modest gain of 16.6pc.

Not every youngster is as committed an environmentalist as Greta Thunberg, but there are plenty who share her beliefs to some degree. Any investment bought on their behalf will need to sit easily with those beliefs and Questor would highlight among its previous tips Vestas Wind Systems, Ceres Power and Greencoat UK Wind

The first is one of the world’s leading makers of wind turbines; its Copenhagen-listed shares are broadly flat since we advised readers to buy them in September last year.

Ceres is a specialist in fuel cell technology and its shares’ 39.2pc fall since our tip in January may offer the chance of a bargain, although we must acknowledge that they may prove volatile in future too. Greencoat UK Wind is an investment trust that owns wind farms in Britain; its shares have fallen by 3.6pc since our tip in July last year.
