Ms Kidman, who is from an Australian family but was born in Hawaii, was married to fellow actor Tom Cruise between 1990 and 2001.
In an interview shortly after the film’s release she said she worked on it during a low period following the couple’s split.
She told the Chicago Sun Times: “That was the only thing I did last year, making this movie.
“I just didn’t want to work. I was like, ‘I’m going to pull out. I can’t. I just don’t. I can’t cope with anything and I don’t want to do it.’
“And I’m so glad I stuck with it, because I sat down in the cinema and just watched it by myself and I thought, I made a movie with Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore and three female characters that is so rich and complex.”
‘I was running from my life at that time’
At a 2015 Women in the World conference in London she said her work following the divorce had been particularly well-received.
“Out of my divorce came work that was applauded, so that was an interesting thing for me,” she said, adding that at the time she was “the loneliest I’d ever been”.
“I was running from my life at that time, I wasn’t able to handle the reality of it and as an actor you have this wonderful thing where you can go and get lost in somebody else’s life.”
