The 5 best facial oils to nourish your tired winter skin

Winter has a way of pivoting my skincare routine in a new direction. Not because the weather is colder, though that certainly has an impact, but because my mood shifts towards products that cosset and nurture my skin, like facial oils.

Admittedly, I went off them for a bit in favour of targeted dermatologist-approved solutions. A facial oil feels nice, but it won’t tighten (though some purport to do so). That’s what active ingredients, such as vitamin C and retinol, are for. Oils mainly act as a barrier-sealing comfort blanket that keeps moisture in.

But there is merit in that, especially if you have dehydrated or menopausal skin – and no clever chemical compound can give skin an instant glow like a traditional facial oil can. Not to mention that oils aid facial massage by providing the necessary slip to manoeuvre rollers, knuckles and hands over facial contours. And so, along with cashmere, I’m reintroducing facial oils for winter.

Seeing as a bottle goes a long way, it’s best not to scrimp – I like to invest in one good one that will comfort my skin on brisk walks and counteract airless central heating. De Mamiel’s Autumn Facial Oil, £85, is formulated with prickly pear seed oil, jasmine and squalene to restore suppleness, while strengthening the skin barrier with echium plant extract, one of the best sources of omegas 3, 6, and 9 essential fatty acids.
