It is a life-defining moment for Japanese youths. On the second Monday of January every year – known formally as Coming of Age day – celebrations are held for all those who have, or will, reach the age of maturity and, with that, new freedoms.

Festivals are held, family parties are thrown and ceremonies take place where government officials give speeches, and small presents are handed out to the newly recognised adults.
