Danny Cipriani’s wife has described the couple’s upset after they were wrongly linked with the rape arrest of an unnamed Sale Sharks and England player.

Victoria, 41, who married the Bath star in a low-key ceremony last year, described her “great alarm and distress” at being approached at their home about the incident on Wednesday morning. 

The identity of the suspect arrested aver the alleged rape of a teenager is known by Telegraph Sport and Victoria clarified that neither she nor her husband “have anything to do with the reported case”. 

She said other journalists had apparently guessed wrongly “that the story already in some parts of the press about a rugby player and his partner being arrested on suspicion of sexual offences might relate to Danny and myself”. 

Writing on social media, she added: “I presume they are making that wild guess because I am the same age as the woman is reported to be in the stories about that case. This is completely unwarranted and wholly unacceptable. It is ridiculous, in fact, but sadly it’s also typical of the intrusion we often have to deal with.” 

In her statement underlining that Cipriani has nothing to do with the case, Victoria added: “Neither Danny nor myself have been arrested, nor do we have anything to do with the reported case, whatsoever. We do not know anything about it. The press have come to the wrong people and I would ask that they please leave us alone, immediately. This is hugely upsetting for so many reasons.
