January transfer latest: Burnley chairman Alan Pace in Croatia to seal Mislav Orsic deal

Burnley chairman Alan Pace is in Croatia trying to wrap up a deal for £7 million rated Dinamo Zagreb attacking midfielder Mislav Orsic.

The Lancashire club are desperate to bring Orsic to Turf Moor before the window closes on Monday night in their bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Pace has travelled to the Croatia capital in an attempt to get the transfer over the line with Dinamo digging in their heels.

Reports have claimed the deal has been held up by Zagreb’s desire for the fee to be paid in full immediately, despite Orsic’s desire to move to Burnley.

Pace’s decision to travel to France and talk directly to Maxwel Cornet last summer played an influential role in Burnley persuading the Ivory Coast forward to join the club from Lyon for £12.9m and the chairman is hoping his presence in Zagreb can convince Dinamo to part company with Orsic.

Dinamo fans have been campaigning for Orsic to stay and the club’s hierarchy are under pressure for the 29-year-old to play in Sunday’s top of the table clash against Rijeka.

At the same time, Burnley are hoping to complete a deal for £12m rated Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst.

Weghorst, 29, is understood to have had a tour of Burnley’s training ground on Thursday, with manager Sean Dyche having settled on the 6ft 6in striker as the ideal replacement for Chris Wood, who left for Newcastle this month in a £25m deal.

Weghorst is said to have trained individually at Wolfsburg on Friday as talks continue over his future.

Raheem Sterling contract talks scheduled for end of season

Manchester City are expected to open contract talks with Raheem Sterling before the end of the season.

The England forward will have 12 months left on his existing £300,000 a week contract this summer.

City and Sterling are both understood to be fairly relaxed about the situation and plan to sit down towards the end of the season.

Sterling raised doubts about his future at City in October when he refused to rule out a move if he did not become a regular starter again under Pep Guardiola.

City recognised that Sterling had little interest in coming to the table at that stage and agreed to give him the time and space he wanted but the situation is due to be addressed before the season is over.

Sterling has since enjoyed a marked return to form, with eight goals in his last 13 appearances and a regular place back in Guardiola’s team, and he is thought to feel the happiest he has done for 12 months.
