Australia hands over 155mm M-777 howitzers to Ukraine. This new support for Ukraine of $26.7 million brings Australia’s total military defense contribution to Ukraine to more than $225 million.

The Australian government is donating six 155mm M777 light towed howitzers and their ammunition to the government of Ukraine.

This is stated in a press release from Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Australian Defense Minister Peter Dutton, which was published by Ukraine’s Ambassador to Australia Vasily Miroshnichenko on Wednesday, April 27.

“This support is provided following a request by the United States and the Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia to provide heavy artillery and ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in connection with Russia’s intensified offensive in the Donbas. This additional military assistance will further support Ukraine in its response to Russia’s brutal, ruthless and illegal invasion “, the message says.

This new support for Ukraine of $26.7 million brings Australia’s total military defense contribution to Ukraine to more than $225 million.

In addition, Australia is providing $65 million in humanitarian assistance, with a focus on protecting women, children and the elderly, in particular food, shelter and basic necessities. Australia is also supplying at least 70,000 tons of thermal coal to feed the Ukrainian resistance.

It was noted that the Australian government will continue to seek opportunities for further military assistance where it can promptly provide the necessary capabilities to the armed forces of Ukraine.

“The Australian Government reiterates its strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as the people of Ukraine. Australia stands with the people of Ukraine and once again calls on Russia to stop its unprovoked, unjust and illegal invasion of Ukraine. The Government will not disclose delivery mechanisms at the direct request of Ukrainian officials and other partners,” the press release says.

Recall that the Government of Canada approved the transfer to Ukraine of a certain number of M-777 howitzers. Canada provided Ukraine with a significant amount of additional Carl Gustaf anti-armor ammunition at the request of Kyiv.
