Ukraine afternoon briefing: Five developments as Russian troops disperse protest rally with stun grenades

Good afternoon. Ukrainian protesters were violently dispersed by what appeared to be stun grenades in the Russian occupied city of Enerhodar on Saturday.

Footage posted on social media showed people fleeing the square amid explosions and clouds of white smoke. Ukrainian authorities later reported that four people had been injured with “severe burns”.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister reported that a total of 4,217 people had been evacuated on Saturday as humanitarian organisations renewed their efforts to set up evacuation corridors from front line regions.

Read the key developments from this afternoon below.

1. Russian troops open fire on Ukrainian demonstrators

A Ukrainian official on Saturday accused Russian forces of opening fire on peaceful demonstrators, injuring four with “severe burns”, in the southern city of Enerhodar occupied by Moscow’s forces.

Russian troops took control of Enerhodar, the site of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, in early March.

“Today in Enerhodar, city residents gathered again for a rally in support of Ukraine, singing the anthem,” Lyudmyla Denisova, Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, said on Telegram.

“The occupiers used light and noise grenades and opened mortar fire on the residents, four people were injured and severely burned.”

Videos circulating on social media showed people fleeing from a square amid explosions and clouds of white smoke.

Denisova said some of the protesters were “forcibly put in paddy wagons and taken away in an unknown direction”. She accused Russian forces of “terrorising the local population”.
