This referred to Mr Musk using similar wording in a previous poll suggesting Twitter needed to do more to protect free speech.
Mr Musk also missed a regulatory deadline for disclosing his stake by nearly a fortnight. US Stock Exchange Commission (SEC) rules say investors have 10 days to disclose any stake of 5pc or more in a listed company.
The Tesla chief executive acquired his Twitter shares on March 14, but did not make his filing until April 4 – a gap of 12 days.
SEC penalties for late filing have typically been about $100,000. Such a penalty is unlikely to trouble Mr Musk, who is the world’s richest man worth an estimated $267bn (£203bn).
Unlike Facebook, Twitter has never had an edit feature allowing users to alter messages after posting them. Facebook introduced the feature in 2012.
Adding an edit button could mirror Facebook’s initial rollout, giving users a window of a few seconds in which to edit a message and remove mis-spelled words.
The Meta-owned social network rolled out later updates allowing edits to be made at any time, which adds an “edited” tag.
Clicking it shows all previous versions of the edited message, helping other users track the original form of a discussion.
Other platforms have introduced similar features. Google-owned YouTube began using its “edit” feature as a way of trying to clean up its infamously foul-mouthed comments sections.
If users attempt to post something obscene or abusive, YouTube detects the bad language and shows a prominent “edit” button, along with one labelled “Post anyway” along with prompts to “keep comments respectful”.
