Asked about the prospect of White netting her 50th international goal, Wiegman said: “I think 49 is already a big achievement, 50 is an even bigger achievement. She’s a striker, she wants to score goals, strikers live from goals, but as I said when she got the [all-time England women’s] record, it starts with how we play as a team, and we want to score lots of goals and at the end it doesn’t really matter who scores the goals.
“If she does score the 50th, I’m really happy for her and we’ll all be really happy for her but mostly we’re very happy for the team because we want to create lots of chances, we want to score lots of goals, and the more people that score goals, the more unpredictable we become, so that’s actually what we’re working on.”
White England and Chelsea defender Millie Bright described White as a “goal machine” but said the Manchester City striker has not been thinking about records for herself, adding: “It would be a huge achievement, but I’d be lying if I said that’s been the conversation [we’ve had]. Ellen is very much ‘two feet on the ground’ and she would do absolutely anything to help the team win.”
And White isn’t the only England striker in good form, with Manchester United’s Alessia Russo having picked up the WSL player of the month award for March on Thursday, and having also scored a hat-trick against Latvia in November. The 23-year-old, who is nine years White’s junior, says White’s success inspires the squad.
“It was really special when she broke the record and it was great for young players like me and Lauren [Hemp] at the time to be on the pitch as well, to see her achieve that, because it makes her even hungrier for years to come,” Russo said. “Ellen is a top, top player to learn from, especially being in my position, and I think that she sets the standard for us to follow, and for her to reach 50 goals would be a massive, massive achievement – and I’m sure she’ll do it because she scores goals all the time.”
