I’m not a vain person and have always taken the low maintenance/big picture approach to beauty. This could be because we only had one tiny mirror in our house when I was growing up and so I’ve never really spent a great deal of time looking at my reflection. That’s one of the good things about getting older: your eyesight is a bit fuzzy, so everything’s in soft focus anyway.
Now, about the graphic-print polo neck. This is a great item to have in your wardrobe. Ideal for layering, particularly at this time of year, it looks good underneath dresses and jumpsuits. I usually buy my jersey roll necks at Muji for £14.95, but for organic cotton, try Lavender Hill and Thought Clothing. Boden usually has an essential stripe. And, hello Land’s End, which has natty prints at bargain prices: I’m about to order the above gingham design – from £11 – and there are also leopard print, houndstooth check and plaid versions.
Keep the next layer plain or have fun with clashing patterns – whatever takes your fancy.
Three tips for jersey polo neck joy
Roll on
I’m not massively into wardrobe management, but I do like to roll up my jersey polo necks, in a kind of half-hearted Marie Kondo-style, in my drawers instead of folding them. It makes all the different colours visible when getting dressed
Go for light layers
The jersey polo neck is a great base layer. Simply add a jumpsuit or dress (shirt or tunic-styles work well) then pull the cuffs of the roll neck out to add extra detail to your sleeves
Keep it neat
Make sure this first layer is a good fit to avoid any extra bulkiness beneath your clothing. You should be able to pull on a dress or jumpsuit over your roll neck without causing rumples
