I’m committing a commercial faux-pas here by sharing this. When I find myself day-dreaming about what I would create were I to have my own fashion line, I often imagine a brand devoted to… waistcoats. So many people lack an awareness of quite how useful a waistcoat is. But I have three. One navy (Jaeger), one bright coral pink (Roksanda) and one full- length grey piece (Acne). I have had them for at least five years.

When I was pregnant this garment was my go-to for smartening up. In winter they are non-bulky layers for under coats, and come spring they are all the warmth I need as the sunshine finally visits us more frequently.

The waistcoat covers the bottom. They can be belted or worn loose. They can be mac-like or cardigan-esque. They elongate… Convinced? On set for this shoot, Victoria, the (magic) make-up artist, asked why I referred to it as a waistcoat. ‘It’s a sleeveless jacket that ends past your waist, at your ankles!’ Perhaps this is why all my Google searches have stalled. I encourage anyone looking for something to spice up their wardrobe to google a range of search terms: ‘sleeveless jackets/ sleeveless blazer/long waistcoat’. Suddenly the world opens up.
