Estonian President Alar Karis signed a law banning the use of Rashist symbols in support of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The relevant law prohibiting the use of such symbols in public space was adopted by the Estonian Parliament last week.
This is reported by the Estonian edition of ERR .
According to the President of Estonia himself, the law prohibits the open display of “symbols used in the commission of an act of aggression, genocide, a crime against humanity or a war crime.” Symbols that have become widespread as a sign of approval of the aggressive war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine are also becoming banned. In addition, earlier symbols, such as the St. George ribbon, are now banned.
For individuals, the law provides for a fine of up to 1200 euros or arrest.
In addition, it will now be a criminal offense in Estonia to join a foreign military force or other armed formation that participated in an act of aggression, to participate in the commission or preparation of an act of aggression by a foreign state, or to explicitly directly support an act of aggression by a foreign state, including its financing.
It is noted that in the final reading the bill was supported by 69 deputies. Three voted against, 11 abstained.
Recall that Estonia was the first among the EU countries to recognize Russia’s actions in Ukraine as genocide .
