The mayor of Novomoskovsk Sergey Reznik is not averse to the idea of renaming his city.
However, the mayor proposes to postpone the renaming itself until victory over the invaders.
He wrote about this in Telegram.
Reznik is convinced that “only slaves can name their streets, squares and cities in honor of the conquerors.”
He explained that the name of the city does not directly fall under the law on decommunization, because none of the definitions provided for in the law – “communist”, “Nazi” or “totalitarian” – can be applied to Novomoskovsk.
The mayor recalled that a draft law on the decolonization of toponymy has now been registered in the Verkhovna Rada. That is, it is proposed to ban the names of geographical objects that propagate and symbolize the occupying state. According to him, even if this bill is not supported by people’s deputies, the community will still raise the question of whether to rename or leave the name Novomoskovsk.
“But not now. Why not now? If only because the final decision on the issue of renaming the city is made not by the city, but by the Verkhovna Rada – on the proposal of the city council. As for the presentation of the city council, I am convinced that it should be based on taking into account the opinion the general public,” Reznik said.
The mayor noted that an approximate fifth or sixth of the city’s population has left for the western regions of the country or abroad.
“If the majority of the townspeople nevertheless speaks out in favor of renaming the city, then we will decide on the name. In what form we will do it, we will think together. In any case, it will be democratic. But after our victory . And now each of us has something to do. Now other priorities,” he concluded.
Recall that about 60 cultural monuments associated with Russia are being dismantled in Kiev.
