In Mariupol, local residents are threatened with the spread of infectious diseases.
The city remains blocked by Russian invaders for almost two months. Now in Mariupol, destroyed by the Russians, there are medieval living conditions .
This was announced by the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova.
“The Russians do not allow the evacuation of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian supplies , depriving people of access to basic needs. Thousands of Mariupol residents are forced to hide in basements, shelters and bunkers, fleeing rocket attacks and aerial bombardments, where they do not see sunlight, do not have clean water and balanced diet ,” the Ombudsman noted.
She recalled that Ukraine has already managed to evacuate more than 100 thousand residents of Mariupol, but almost 120 thousand cannot leave because of the actions of the Russian army.
So, on the night of April 28 alone, Russian troops carried out 50 air strikes, used phosphorus bombs, rockets, and artillery.
“Mariupol residents are under systematic shelling, in a complete information vacuum. They are exhausted by hunger and constant threats,” writes Denisova.
According to preliminary estimates, more than 22,000 civilians have been killed in Mariupol since March 1. At least 15,000 elderly and chronically ill people could die as the besieged city faces catastrophic shortages of medicines, food and drinking water.
The Ombudsman warned that about 100 thousand Mariupol residents are in mortal danger also because of unbearable living conditions and unsanitary conditions:
- thousands of corpses decompose under the rubble;
- there is no centralized water supply;
- garbage is not taken out (for nothing) for more than a month and a half;
- sewage treatment plants and pumps are not working.
“The air temperature is already reaching 20 degrees. Against the backdrop of warming, rising groundwater and in the absence of medical assistance, the city is threatened with a sharp deterioration in the epidemiological situation,” she stressed.
In particular, we are talking about the threat of the spread of dangerous infections – cholera, dysentery, escherichiosis , which cause severe forms of disease and lead to the death of the elderly, young children and people with weakened immune systems.
According to the mayor of Mariupol, Vadim Boychenko, the conditions of life in the ruined city are medieval . An immediate and complete evacuation is needed.
Earlier, the Ukrainian defenders of Mariupol spoke about the merciless shelling of Azovstal and new injuries and losses.
