President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that with the help of the UN, it is possible to organize an evacuation mission of people from Mariupol. However, it is necessary that Russia actually do what it says.
Zelensky spoke on this topic at a meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres in Kiev.
The President announced this in an evening video message on April 28.
“Of course, during the negotiations we paid a lot of attention to how to save our people from Mariupol. I believe that with the help of the UN it is possible to organize an evacuation mission. Ukraine is ready for these steps,” the head of state said.
“But it is also necessary for the Russian side to treat this issue without cynicism and really do what it says,” he added.
Zelensky recalled that Moscow had announced an alleged ceasefire in Mariupol. However, the bombing of the positions of the defenders of the city continues.
“This is a war crime that the Russian military is committing literally before the eyes of the whole world. Russian strikes on Mariupol did not stop even when the UN Secretary General was at the talks in Moscow,” the president said.
Recall, the UN coordinator in Ukraine, Osnat Lubrani, said she was going to Zaporozhye to coordinate the rescue of people from Mariupol.
