EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell called Mariupol the European Aleppo. The Ukrainian city is destroyed, and thousands of civilians are dead.
He announced the intention of the European Union to continue to help Ukraine in order to end the Russian aggression as soon as possible.
Josep Borrell wrote about this on Twitter.
“Mariupol is European Aleppo. A city destroyed to the ground. With thousands of dead civilians. We will do our best to end this war as quickly as possible. And for this we will continue to help Ukraine,” the high EU representative stressed.
In a follow-up message, Borrell added that the war in Ukraine is transforming global geopolitics.
Recall that before the war, Aleppo was the second largest city in Syria, with almost two million inhabitants. During the battles for Aleppo, from 20 to 30 thousand people died, hundreds of thousands were forced to leave their homes.
As we previously reported, on the night of April 28, the Russian military carried out 50 airstrikes on Mariupol . The invaders dropped phosphorus bombs prohibited by the Geneva Convention on the city. In addition, rockets were used and artillery fired.
The US Department of Defense believes that part of the Russian troops retreated from the blockaded Mariupol and is moving in a northwestern direction – to the Zaporozhye region.
