Former world No. 1, famous German tennis player Boris Becker has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for his part in the scam.
The 54-year-old winner of six Grand Slam tournaments and two-time Davis Cup winner was found guilty of violating bankruptcy law and hiding assets.
It is reported by the BBC .
In 2017, Boris Becker was declared bankrupt after failing to repay a $14 million loan on time. After that, the German withdrew 390 thousand pounds from his business account, did not declare real estate in Germany and hid 825 thousand euros of debt.
The former tennis player was found guilty on 4 counts under the Bankruptcy Act.
In the case, the jury concluded that Becker acted “intentionally and dishonestly.” They found that Boris hid £1 million in sales from a Mercedes dealership in his home town of Lymen, hid a bank loan of nearly £700,000 for the house, and hid a £66,000 share gain in a tech firm.
According to Judge Deborah Taylor, Becker “showed no sign of remorse or admission of guilt.”
“You didn’t heed the warning, and the chance that the suspended sentence gave you. This is a serious burdensome circumstance,” Taylor said.
Becker is expected to spend half of his term behind bars. In case of good behavior, the ex-tennis player will serve the other half of the term on probation.
