For more than two years we have been watching the return of folding beds. There are many form factors of this type of smartphone, and each of them makes sense. However, my favorite is a compact and lightweight smartphone that easily fits in your pocket, while you can always use the big screen. In general, I do not need a large and heavy smartphone that can turn into a tablet.

Design

Huawei P50 Pocket just sticks to the form factor that I like. When folded, it is small and compact almost like a square: 75.5 × 87.3 × 15.2 mm. This miracle weighs 190 grams.

The smartphone is far from small. For some reason, Huawei decided to give it a 6.9-inch diagonal, which makes the P50 Pocket quite a large device.

Huawei called the fashion designer from the Netherlands Iris van Herpen. She made an interesting metal texture:

There is also a white version. She got a plastic case. Whether we will sell such a version, I do not know, but it looks, in my opinion, very interesting:

The gold version has one major drawback: the case collects fingerprints very quickly, and it is rather difficult to remove them. The white version does not have this problem.

Comfort

In the hands of the smartphone feels quite large. It’s just a matter of choosing a large internal display. However, according to the sensations, all the buttons, the fingerprint scanner are in place, the size of the smartphone does not interfere with the use.

I read that a lot of people found the P50 Pocket hard to open. A very strange impression, because my sample opened without any problems. With one hand, it was not at all difficult to do this, which cannot be said about the last Flip.

It is worth accepting the fact that the P50 Pocket is not rigidly fixed in any position, except for two: closed and open. Therefore, it will be problematic to make video calls by placing a half-folded smartphone in front of you: the phone simply does not lock in this position.

Display

As I said, the main display here is huge. Its diagonal is 6.9 inches, and the resolution is non-standard 2790 × 1188 pixels with a density of 440 dpi. Image refresh rate 120 Hz.

The picture is bright, juicy and smooth. The OLED matrix of the main display does its job perfectly. But I would like the display to have more brightness. The fact is that I used a smartphone in Dubai – and there the sun shone very brightly. Sometimes I had to look at the display to understand what was written to me. True, in cloudy Moscow I did not encounter such problems – the brightness was enough for my eyes.

There is a fold. It is especially noticeable when the screen is off at angles:

But you stop noticing it the moment you start using your smartphone.

It’s nice to slide your finger across the screen, I didn’t notice any problems with the material.

External screen

The small round display is also made on OLED technology. It is small: 1.04 inches at 340×340 pixels. Thus, the pixel density is a significant 328 ppi.

This display is needed for notifications, as well as for taking selfies. By the way, pictures taken with it are not cropped, as is the case with the main Korean competitor.

The fingerprint scanner

The scanner is located on the side face under the thumb of the right hand. Works quickly and without any complaints.

Iron

The smartphone received a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 system-on-chip. The main difference between this chip and its counterpart in other smartphones is the lack of a 5G modem. But in our country it is not needed. And for many users, its absence will be a significant plus, since there is an assumption that smartphones without 5G are not dangerous. We will leave such judgments on the conscience of conspiracy theorists, but I simply could not help but mention them.

Only one 12/512 GB version is officially sold in Russia. To be honest, I don’t really understand why such power is needed for a fashion device. But, probably, the logic “more is better than less” works here. As a result, a reserve for the future is always a good strategy.

The Huawei P50 Pocket has a battery with a nominal capacity of 4000 mAh. The smartphone supports 40W Huawei SuperCharge fast charging, as well as 5W reverse wire charging. There is no wireless charging due to the metal case. But, unexpectedly for a flagship device, there is a power supply included!

By the way, it is worth noting that the P50 Pocket has the most capacious battery for devices of this class. Prior to this, all compact clamshells received batteries, the nominal capacity of which did not exceed 3500 mAh.

Such a battery led to a simple result: the smartphone lasts all day. Therefore, no matter what manufacturers say about energy-efficient processors and special technologies that allow you to increase the operating time, unfortunately, small batteries give a short operating time.

Camera

Let’s put it this way: this smartphone has three cameras. These are wide, ultra wide and front camera. They are doing their job well.

There is also a camera with “Ultra Spectrum photography” technology, the place of application of which is completely unknown to me. It is also worth adding that basically it only works in the dark, creating a glow effect. For example, pictures of money will look spectacular.

This camera works like this: there is a special UV lamp that shines at the moment when the picture is taken. And it is done on the most ordinary camera. Because of this, problems typical of darkness arise: poor focus, as well as reduced image detail. At least that was the case with my sample, and I could not achieve better results:

Harmony OS

Who should use Huawei P50 Pocket? With an eye to the lack of Google services, including Google Play, a clear portrait of the owner of this smartphone emerges.

This person does not necessarily use Gmail. The Russian “Yandex.Mail” is enough for a potential buyer. This person is on VK, Odnoklassniki and chats on Telegram. Instagram, Twitter and Facebook did not give up on him at all, neither in an unlocked nor even in a blocked form. This person either does not watch YouTube at all, or watches it on a computer or TV screen.

Do you represent such a person? I am quite. There are hundreds of thousands of such users.

It may seem strange to you, but there are people who do not care about these things. They don’t care about the 120Hz screen and most of the features that their smartphones have. Mass devices are made for mass users, that is, for ordinary people, and not for geeks.

Outcome

Huawei P50 Pocket is designed for users who do not experience any particular difficulties in the absence of Western services and technologies. But they also want something. And a clamshell with an interesting metal texture, made by Huawei, is just the most “such”.
