During the war, many Ukrainians were forced to change their place of residence. In stressful conditions of physical danger it is hard for adults and children.
Forced evacuation can have a very negative impact on the emotional state of children due to possible difficulties in accepting and adapting to a new life reality. Psychologist, candidate of psychological sciences Irina Tychina on the Psychological Support channel tells what to do about it.
Changing the place of residence, especially if it is a different country, can cause different emotional and behavioral reactions in children:
- unstable emotional state (from extremely positive emotions to extremely negative ones);
- increased emotional manifestations (when emotional reactions are very violent);
- behavioral disturbance (even in children who were usually obedient);
- problems of communication and violation of relations with peers and adults (misunderstandings, conflicts).
How to help a child?
During this period, it is important to maintain the usual mode of life of the child, to create a happy childhood for all adversities, even in conditions of forced migration.
If any important events are approaching (birthdays, public holidays), celebrate them if possible.
You can also create pleasant moments by organizing meetings with friends, new acquaintances or excursions to interesting places.
This will balance the emotional state of the child , saturate him with positive impressions. The holiday should not be postponed until later, for the post-war period, because life cannot be stopped.
Try to resume the usual activities that the child did at home.
This gives peace of mind and inner balance, allows you to restore a sense of stability in life.
It is important to keep learning. This can be done offline at a local school, in the territory where you are now, or online at a Ukrainian school.
If possible, you can continue those activities in which the child was included at home, play music, sports, attend circles.
Make sure that the child moves enough, is more in the fresh air. Hiking or cycling, morning or evening jogging, any sports, individually or in a group, are good.
If possible, involve children in volunteering aimed at strengthening Ukraine and every Ukrainian.
Joining the common national cause gives personal confidence, forms patriotic feelings, and allows you to feel like a real Ukrainian.
