Ukrainian artist Maria Kulikovskaya, who was born and raised in the Crimea, tried to attract public attention in Berlin with her new performance.
Maria lay down under the Ukrainian flag to present her performance “254” near the New National Gallery in Berlin.
The performance is based on Kulikovskaya’s 2014 performance in St. Petersburg to protest Russia’s annexation of Crimea, which led to her brief arrest by Russian police.
Maria Kulikovskaya was born in Kerch and lived in Kyiv until she moved to Austria after Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.
After the annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of hostilities in the Donbas, Maria spoke out about the war many times.
“Of course, the war is not directly related to my profession, as well as to the specialty of a doctor, teacher and driver. I am an architect by profession – this profession makes you think and build. Actors and artists are probably more sensual people, and because for the openness of feelings they stand guard over events. I don’t know how the war can not be affected,” the artist told shcherbenkoartcentre.com . “Especially if this war is in your country. It makes you think a lot, work on your intellectual capabilities, and as an artist, architect, person, woman, I cannot agree with the war.”
