The prince was stripped of another title – Freedom of the City of York. The decision to cancel the award was made by a vote in York City Council on April 27, 2022. Council members voted unanimously to remove the title from Prince Andrew , with two abstaining from voting. They also urged him to renounce the title of Duke of York.
The Liberal Democratic Party adviser Darryl Smalley, who made the proposal, subsequently said Andrew must renounce his dukedom or “the government and Buckingham Palace must intervene to strip him of his title,” according to Royal Central .
Prince Andrew received the honorary title “Freedom of the City” in 1987, a year after he became the Duke of York on his wedding day to Sarah Ferguson . The duchy is traditionally passed on to the second sons of monarchs.
The vote was called following a US civil court case in which Virginia Giuffre accused Prince Andrew of sexual assault. The prince denied the accusations, and later his lawyers managed to settle the issue out of court. According to media assumptions, the deal amounted to between 7 and 12 million pounds.
Prince Andrew is the first person ever to be stripped of the honorary title of resident of York. Earlier, Queen Elizabeth II deprived her son of military ranks and royal patronage.
