iPhone under threat? Russia may deprive Apple of a key component

March 06, 2022, 08:25

This morning, the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade announced that it may limit the export of artificial sapphires to foreign manufacturers. According to rumors, these include Apple, which bought them at the Monocrystal plant about 7 years ago. The ministry notes that “the share of Russian artificial sapphires in the world market is very large and currently reaches up to 40%”, because of which, in theory, the restriction of exports can lead to an aggravation of the already protracted shortage of semiconductors. However, it is immediately noted that “the Ministry of Industry and Trade does not seek to develop unfriendly scenarios of actions and reserves this right to respond only in the most extreme situations.” At the same time, it is not specified whether Apple remains a client of our factories – the last mention of cooperation dates back to 2015.
