Opel Crossland test drive: all updates are for the better

Remember a car like the Opel Crossland X ? He was updated: he lost the letter X, but acquired a new front end, new equipment, a new range of versions. All this is good, but I am tormented by vague doubts – how does the clearly elderly Opel Crossland look today against the background of young competitors, including the Opel Mokka model? Let’s try to understand the format of “TOP-5 questions and answers”.

Updated crossover Opel Crossland? Well, at least you can see it…

There are few changes in appearance. But clearly more than meets the eye. Of course, the new front of the Opel Vizor attracts all the attention: a large black flat insert between the headlights, a new front bumper with a silver trapezoid, chrome trim on the corners. Simply put, the Opel Crossland car was pulled up to a new corporate design – which, however, turned out quite well.

Concentrating on the front end, it is important not to deprive other sides of the car of attention. Behind you are waiting for new lights (they are smoky-tinted), which are also connected by a black jumper. The model name is now in larger print and centered on the tailgate. Finally, the main change when looking at the sidewalls is the new black and silver rims. Please note: they have convex spokes and there may be a risk of scratching the wheels when parking “close” near a high curb.

The Opel Crossand crossover did not visually change significantly, it was simply designed in a new corporate key – and the main thing here, of course, is the new Opel Vizor front end . Plus small changes at the rear, and new rims. Not much…

So maybe there are more changes in the cabin?

If the front part has changed in the style of the new models (we use the Opel Mokka with the design of the Opel Vizor as a reference point), then there is no need to talk about the Pure Panel concept here. A traditional front panel with soft contours, familiar pointers with a small display, a separate “climate” block, a neatly “fitted” touch display. Do you know what the main change in the cabin is? New upholstery: a combination of black eco-leather and suede on the seats – it all looks really cool, and feels even better to the touch. But the seats themselves are not easy: they are AGR certified (German organization for solving back problems), there is a retractable extension pillow under the legs, there is an adjustment of the lumbar support. Everything cool! Except for one thing: they forgot to add lateral support. The seat is perceived as flat, the rollers are barely pronounced, they weakly hold the body in corners – and Opel Crossland, oh, how heels …

But about the movement later, but for now let’s look back. You have to look through a small door that opens up a rather high (and this is a plus), but a narrow opening (and this is a minus) – I would like more free access to the second row of seats. But the rear sofa itself is worked out perfectly: it is divided into two parts, which can be independently moved forward / backward within 150 mm (if you move the sofa forward, the trunk volume will increase from 410 to 520 liters), plus it is possible to adjust the backrest angle. The central part of the backrest can be thrown forward – a kind of imitation of the armrest and a hatch in the trunk for transporting long items. Finally, at the end of the center console there is a connector for charging gadgets and a niche tray for small items. And large things will be packed in the trunk without any problems: with a double floor, a couple of hooks and hidden side niches.

Let it not be a sample of design or a riot of colors – the calm forms of the front panel, black and gray colors. But a good option in terms of ergonomics and transformation possibilities is a normal view, the usual arrangement of controls, a rear sofa with wide adjustment options (if only to make the doorway larger). Plus, the salon knows how to please with optional, but pleasant little things: lighting in the doors under the speakers, a deep niche in front of the automatic transmission lever … And the trunk is not bad.

What’s on the go? Something has changed?

The press release for the updated Opel Crossland model promises us changes in the suspension, new shock absorbers and springs, as well as reconfigured steering. But in fact, the car drives about the same as it was driving before. I like its light and clear steering – it is easy to choose the trajectory of the turn with it, the car does not stubbornly turn. But I don’t like that there are large body rolls in these very corners: after all, a tall and narrow crossover. Moreover, the suspension initially seems soft – it easily absorbs many small bumps, smoothly shakes the body on a wave (well, and allows these very rolls in corners). But as soon as there is a large pit or sharply protruding bumps – for example, you need to run over tram rails or uneven slabs on the road – the suspension immediately gives up: harsh and shaky, with thuds from below.

Maybe go quieter? Moreover, a 110-horsepower engine paired with an “automatic” clearly does not promise explosive dynamics. But they know their business: good traction at medium speeds, a good start from a standstill. The car feels a bit faster than measured 0-100 km/h or top speed readings. Perhaps this is partly the merit of the “automatic”, which often keeps a lower gear than in Peugeot or Citroen cars of a similar class and with similar technology. Conditionally: where the “French” ride in fifth gear and 1.5 thousand revolutions, this Opel holds fourth – engine speeds are slightly higher, in the zone of maximum torque. In a word, different settings for the motor and gearbox, although the technique itself is identical: both related to the “French”, and to itself 2-3 years ago.

In fact, there is only one noticeable change that can affect the ride – this is the introduction of the Grip Control system, well known from Peugeot and Citroen cars. The rotary washer allows you to choose one of the operating modes that is best suited for a certain type of rough terrain: snow, mud, sand. Thus, the traction control system and automatic transmission switching logic are individually configured, which can help in some situations on light off-road conditions. Frankly, good winter tires and the steady skills of an experienced driver will do the job just as well. But for a beginner driving, yes, in the style of “getting out of the snow in the yard” or “driving along a sandy forest road” – this system can be useful. Moreover, the Opel Crossland car has a front-wheel drive type, all-wheel drive versions are impossible in principle here. It turned out here is such a minimal help for easy off-road.

The test car was equipped with a 1.2-liter 110-horsepower gasoline engine and a 6-speed “automatic”. Everything is as before, including consumption: in the city it is stable 8.5-9 liters per 100 km, on a conditional highway “hundred” (90-110 km / h) – about 5-6 liters per 100 km of track. Perhaps the main technical change can be called the Grip Control system – which, however, manifests itself only on light off-road conditions. But do not rush to postpone Opel Crossland in the far corner of your consumer requests – after all, with the update of the car, much more interesting options for power units have appeared in the range.

What are the motors? What versions? How much does a car cost?

Once upon a time, when preparing the first review of the Opel Crossland X , the car was offered only with a 110-horsepower turbo engine and an “automatic”. But the range of versions gradually grew – for example, a 1.2-liter naturally aspirated engine was added, paired with “mechanics”, which made it possible to reduce the starting price. And after the update, the Opel Crossland crossover received another version with a turbodiesel and automatic transmission, plus the number of trim levels increased.

Start gives the car Opel Crossland Edition : a gasoline 1.2-liter naturally aspirated engine (82 hp) paired with “mechanics”, ABS and ESP, cruise control, front and side airbags, side curtain airbags, power steering, 2-zone climate control, leather multifunction steering wheel, Eco LED headlights, rain sensor, heated front seats and steering wheel, Radio R 4.0 IntelliLink multimedia (7-inch display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), lane control and traffic sign reading , steel wheels with caps, etc. The price of Opel Crossland Edition 1.2 82 manual transmission – from 510 thousand. UAH or about $18 thousand.

A level up is the Elegance version , which adds the following: Grip Control (for turbodiesel), AGR-certified front seats, eco-leather/fabric upholstery, 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, keyless entry and engine start button. This modification is offered with a 110-horsepower 1.2-liter turbo engine or a 120-horsepower 1.5-liter turbodiesel, and a 6-speed “automatic” acts as a partner for the engines. The price of Opel Crossland Elegance 1.2 110 automatic transmission is from 654 thousand rubles. UAH or $ 23 thousand, the price of Opel Crossland Elegance 1.5 Diesel 120 automatic transmission – from 687 thousand. UAH or a little over $24,000.

The top of the Ukrainian lineup of Opel Crossland is the Ultimate package , which is distinguished by the following: adjustable sliding rear seats, combined eco-leather/suede upholstery, heated windshield, Grip Control system for a gasoline engine, NAVI PRO multimedia with standard navigation and 8-inch display, Full LED headlights, original 17-inch wheels, etc. The price of Opel Crossland Ultmate 1.2 110 automatic transmission is from 718 thousand thousand. UAH or $25 thousand.

Of course, today there are more technologically “advanced” cars in the class. But still, the Opel Crossland crossover will not hit the face in the dirt: heated steering wheel (I remember Citroen C 4, where heating appeared only recently), 2-zone “climate” (I remember Opel Mokka , where there is only 1-zone “climate”), multimedia with 8-inch display, Full LED headlights and auto-switching of low / high beams, lane control (warning only, the system does not equalize the car). All this comes in a package: we took the maximum version – we got all the equipment, without additional payment for options.

In the end: all updates – for the better?

As it turned out, in the case of the Opel Crossland car, yes. Now I will explain. Today, Opel has two crossovers of similar size and format in its lineup: the new generation Opel Mokka and this Opel Crossland. The situation is reminiscent of Citroen, where the new C4 and the updated C3 Aircross intersect in the lineup. That’s just in the case of “chevrons”, it turned out a one-sided game – of course, in favor of the Citroen C4. However, in the case of Opel, the situation is different: both cars are separated at different corners of the ring (even within the same class) and Opel Crossland finds its niche quite well.

If the Opel Mokka crossover takes design, powerful engines, advanced equipment, and some kind of drive, then the updated Opel Crossland responds with practicality: it costs less, offers ample opportunities for transforming the interior, diesel has been added, and indeed the range of versions has become wider. As a result: although the update does not bring radical improvements, it favorably emphasizes the already existing advantages of the car.
