The first season of The Book of Boba Fett, a seven-episode spin-off of The Mandalorian, has ended . Now is the time to talk about how the series turned out. But first, it’s worth remembering the backstory of the main character.

Where did Boba Fett come from?

In the Star Wars universe, a bounty hunter for hire named Boba Fett has gone through an interesting journey – from a minor character, he transformed into a main character, for whom an entire series was allocated.

It’s funny to say that Boba’s first appearance was in the 1978 Christmas special, which was an unsuccessful TV movie with crazy scenes, songs and animated inserts. The film is not customarily included in the franchise’s timeline, but fans have not forgotten about it (when you want to watch Chewbacca’s wife cook dinner, you can turn on the one and a half hour The Star Wars Holiday Special on YouTube).

But seriously speaking, Boba Fett really appeared before the audience in the early 1980s, becoming the character of Episode V (The Empire Strikes Back) and Episode VI (Return of the Jedi) . Then Boba was a taciturn mercenary in Mandalorian armor – he carried out orders for Jabba the Hutt and Darth Vader. In one of the battles, Boba failed, and Han Solo pushed the bounty hunter into the jaws of a sarlacc, a giant creature that lives in the dune sea of the planet Tatooine. For a long time it was believed that the mercenary died in the belly of a monster.

A few years later, George Lucas made the decision to expand Boba’s storyline by returning to the hero’s childhood. In 2002, Episode II (Attack of the Clones) was released, in which the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett appeared – he helped create hundreds of clones for the Grand Army of the Republic and left one genetic clone for himself to raise the boy as his own son. That child was Boba.

When Django died at the hands of Jedi Master Windu, young Boba took his father’s armor for himself (this equipment has always been of great importance – a helmet with scuffs and a dent was a hallmark of the character).

Connection with the Mandalorian

For a long time it seemed that Boba Fett would no longer appear in the cinema (additional information about him could only be found in the comics and the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars ).

However, Boba returned to us in 2020, when Disney+ released the second season of The Mandalorian – in the sixth episode, we learned that Boba, having escaped from the jaws of the sarlacc, intends to find his property.

The second season of The Mandalorian ends on a post-credits scene as Boba Fett becomes the landowner of the city of Mos Espa with the help of the elite mercenary Fennec Shand. However, after what he saw, many questions remained. How was Boba able to survive being inside the monster? Why was he left without armor and dressed like a nomad? What kind of weapon does he carry on his back? Under what circumstances did the hero team up with Fennec?

The Boba Fett Book series provides detailed answers to questions not voiced in The Mandalorian, where all attention was riveted on Dean Djarin and Grog.

What happens in The Book of Boba Fett (no spoilers)

The events of the new series take place in the center of Mos Espa. Boba Fett is actively collecting tribute, taking the throne of the ruler. The heads of influential families come to bow to him, but Fett has not yet earned the respect of the local population. Together with Fennec Shand, the hero will have to figure out the city’s intrigues and come into conflict with spice dealers.

The plot develops in two directions, complementing each other. Boba Fett has dreams in which flashbacks from the past appear – the character remembers everything that happened after the sarlacc closed the giant mouth. After waking up, Fett returns to reality, where he is regularly attacked by assassins who further undermine the authority of the landowner.

In The Book of Boba Fett, representatives of various alien races appear who gather in a cantina – visitors to the bar drink drinks and relax under the performance of a musical group. This spectacle is sure to please Star Wars fans, awakening nostalgia in them. But the most interesting will be the episode, which takes place far from the city.

The Tusken tribe lives in the desert sands – at first their culture seems primitive, but after a close acquaintance, the savages win over themselves, discovering the customs of the nomadic people (and this happens without words that we understand).

The character of Boba Fett is also trying in every possible way to inspire sympathy. Unlike The Mandalorian, he constantly removes his helmet, which is why we often see the face of actor Temuer Morrison (fun fact: in 2002, Jango Fett was played by the same artist). In his performance, Bob no longer seems like a cold-blooded mercenary, now he is a wise and fair warrior who wants to renounce his former life. Instead of cruelty, he chooses cunning, turning enemies into allies.

Bobba is gathering a team to help him prepare for the final battle for the city. Not all fighters fit into the big picture. For example, a street gang of cyborgs resembles a group of students who have gathered for a steampunk party – it seems that they came here from another MCU.

It’s worth mentioning that Jon Favreau was the showrunner for the series, and he was joined on set by Robert Rodriguez (who directed From Dusk Till Dawn and Sin City ). Their collaboration influenced the style of the story and the denouement, stuffed with chaotic fights. Also not without Rodriguez’s favorite artist – Danny Trejo ( Machete ) appears in a short cameo.

In visual solutions, the creators remain true to the old style of Star Wars. The special effects in the series are deliberately simplified, and many creatures are created without the help of CGI. However, there are special scenes in which improved graphics are noticeable (compared to The Mandalorian).

Obviously, all bets are made on the final series. Where Boba’s memories end, the fan service begins (it completely distracts from how weak and uninteresting the final battle turned out to be).

Without spoilers, one thing can be summarized – if you are waiting for the third season of The Mandalorian, then you will not be able to miss The Book of Boba Fett. The action of the series takes place in the same storyline.

Well, the next multi-part Star Wars project will be a series about Obi-Wan Kenobi starring Ewan McGregor. The release of the first series is scheduled for May 25, 2022.
