What ultimately created the German brand, which was previously associated only with sports cars and gasoline cars?

Positioning Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo

Probably, the most precise definition for the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo was given during the first Ukrainian meeting with an electric car in the summer of 2021: this is the most “universal station wagon”. On the one hand, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car received a body as close as possible to the concept of a station wagon: an elongated and higher rear roof, a fifth door with access to the passenger compartment. On the other hand, along the way, he received “bonuses” from the world of crossovers: increased ground clearance (+20-30 mm relative to the sedan) and protective lining on the lower part of the body.

It all started in 2019 when the Porsche Taycan electric sedan debuted . Its Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo followed in early 2021 : a wagon but with hints of a crossover. However, the history of the Porsche Taycan family does not stand still: the GTS version of the electric car has recently debuted . And now the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo is just a classic station wagon without any “cross” additives.

How the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo drives

Rides great. Each acceleration is an acceleration along a smooth string that connects electrical impulses in the driver’s nerve cells with electrical impulses inside Porsche’s electric motors. You always praise an electric car for such straightforwardness in reactions, but this “German” knows how to surprise. Firstly, the level of dynamics, acceleration, acceleration itself is very high: in fact, you are dealing with the power of a sports car. Secondly, he is not averse to switching to emotions: when starting from Launch Control, and when clicking the gear in the rear engine drive, it seems as if a living organism is waking up inside the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. A sort of beast on wheels, ready to shred the pavement with 285mm tires and deliver extra acceleration to this planet!

Do you want to be calmer? Then choose the driving mode “Normal” or “Range”, activate the increased recuperation with the button on the steering wheel – and enjoy the usual drive. Even in such modes, the dynamics are more than enough. At the same time, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car always manages to combine the sharpness of the steering wheel and minimal body roll with an elastic, but not rigid suspension. I admit that the “cross” version is good just because of its less dependence on the quality of asphalt: compared to the Taycan sedan, there are almost no hard bumps on bumps and there are less risks of hitting something with bumpers. Yes, you can just relax in the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car! At the same time, without losing the feeling of drive at all. The main point is that the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car is as versatile as possible not only in its body type and capabilities, but also in its driving character.

As cool as the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo looks from the front/bottom, it’s just as hard to get a good angle from the rear/top. The low, wide body promises us an incredible drive (does not deceive!), But the heavy rear end clearly emphasizes that the electric car weighs a considerable 2.2 tons (dramatically maneuvering in multidirectional turns, you are convinced of this again and again). The dynamics are all the more surprising: with the promised 4.1 seconds, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car showed 3.9 seconds from the first attempts – the level of an internal combustion engine supercar from the recent past. But now everything is implemented in the format of an electric cross-station wagon …

How much is hidden in the word “universal”. First of all, for the rear passengers, who received a noticeable increase in headroom: plus almost five centimeters. This increase is felt, there is more “air” behind. And with a margin for legs, it was quite good before. One question – why, with an almost 2-meter wide body, only two adults fit inside the rear? Look for the answer in the wide sexy “hips” above the rear wheels. And in general: the formula for recording interior space from Porsche looks like “4 + 1”. Like, here you have excellent bucket seats for four people and plus one extra seat, which is impossible to use due to the huge central tunnel.

Needless to say, the cabin is permeated with a sense of quality? Every line, every scrap of leather, every panel is made to the envy of other well-known electro-competitors. Well, you get the idea. And the entire front panel is the realm of displays: a dashboard (diagonal 16.8 inches), a center monitor (diagonal 10.9 inches), a touch screen on the middle console (diagonal 8.4 inches), and even a separate optional display for front passenger (diagonal 10.9 inches). It seems, where is the historical heritage here? But as soon as everything is turned off, suddenly the front panel with its horizontal lines recalls the Porsche 911 of the 964 and 993 generations from the 1990s, and the inclined center console recalls the interior of the Porsche Carrera GT supercar of the early 2000s. How symbolic…

The interior is created on the contrast of classic Porsche shapes and modern color displays. And the landing formula “4 + 1” could not even be prescribed – it is already read through the bucket seats. Concerning the sedan, a headroom has been added here, the trunk has become larger and more convenient to use. Plus, under the hood there is another additional trunk.

Innovations in the electric car Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo

Here references to past articles are obligatory. On the example of the Porsche Taycan sedan, the technique of this model (and this family in general) was described for the first time. And acquaintance with the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo model told us all the key differences – a higher roof and more headroom for rear passengers, increased ground clearance and preparation for rough terrain. I will only briefly note the main points: these electric vehicles were created on the J1 platform, which was originally developed only for EV models (there are no internal combustion engines), options are possible with rear or all-wheel drive and with two batteries to choose from.

And speaking in detail, the Taycan electric car has become revolutionary in many ways: for the first time, an 800-volt power architecture was used (battery operating voltage 723 volts), which made it possible to realize charging up to 270 kW when powered by special DC charging stations. This allows you to charge the battery within 5-80% in just 22.5 minutes. It is also possible to charge from AC sources: with a power of 11 kW, it will take 9-10 hours to fully charge the battery. In addition, one of the features of the electric car was a 2-speed gearbox (gear ratios 15:1 and 8:1) for the rear electric motor. Moreover, the lower “power” stage is activated only during the most dynamic and abrupt starts, and under normal driving conditions, the electric car starts moving and goes further immediately at a higher stage.

And now a couple of differences in the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo model. So, this electric car initially provides for a four-wheel drive with two electric motors and the largest battery: a nominal capacity of 93.4 kWh, an actually used capacity of 83.7 kWh, a total of 33 modules. In addition, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car is distinguished by increased ground clearance (+20-30 mm relative to the Taycan sedan) and original steering knuckles in the suspension. Also a feature of the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is the off-road GRAVEL mode and an electronic compass, not a chronometer on top of the center console, etc.

The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car is interesting due to the combination of Taycan technology (in principle, very advanced in itself) and its own technical differences: a few millimeters in size, suspension settings and a given level of clearance, more space for rear passengers, increased trunk volume. It seems that all these are trifles – but they set a new perception of this electric car.

The price of the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and its competitors

Let’s remember the Porsche Taycan sedan again and immediately forget it: the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo cross-station wagon only partially repeats it: be sure to note that only a large battery and all-wheel drive were originally offered for the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. There are four main versions, they differ in power / equipment / range – and price.

The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4 opens the range (from 87,600 euros): 476 hp maximum. and 500 Nm, power reserve 360-456 km, acceleration 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. On the next step is the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4 S version (from 101,700 euros) : a maximum of 571 hp. and 650 Nm, power reserve 355-452 km, acceleration 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. One level up – modification of the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo (from 139 100 euros) : maximum 680 hp and 850 Nm, power reserve 345-452 km, acceleration 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. Finally, in the position of the TOP model is the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo S (from 168 500 euros) : maximum 761 hp and 1050 Nm, power reserve 330-419 km, acceleration 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds.

But this is only the beginning, as further equipment nuances follow. On the one hand, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4S electric car offers good equipment “in the base”: adaptive air suspension, active aerodynamics (retractable spoiler), 2-zone “climate”, LED headlights, power seats, instrument panel based on 16, 8-inch display, hi-fi audio, PCM (Porsche Communication Management) multimedia and much more. On the other hand, there is space where you can roam around the options …

The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4 S test electric car received a leather interior (UAH 111,000), Mamba Green (UAH 34,000), 20-inch wheels (UAH 78,000), PDLS Plus headlights (UAH 68,000 ). .UAH), panoramic roof (UAH 50 thousand), adaptive cruise (UAH 72 thousand), passenger display (UAH 32 thousand), BOSE audio (UAH 42 thousand), heat pump (UAH 24 thousand), etc. As a result: initially, such an electric car Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo 4 S starts from about 3.3 million hryvnia, but the test electric car received options for 1 million hryvnia – and as a result, its price exceeded 4 .3 million hryvnia. What about the competitors?

Among the traditional manufacturers of cars / electric vehicles, only the stylish Audi e-tron Sportback in the S version and the updated Jaguar I-Pace electric car can be singled out as competitors. Both offer a well-known brand and a classy salon. Both are cheaper than the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and can only compete with the “4” or “4S” versions, not the Turbo variants. Plus, we can note the Tesla Model Y in the Performance version: minimalism in the cabin and inferior to the quality of the finish, but it can offer excellent dynamics and a large power reserve. In general, that’s all…

In fact, there are “one or two” competitors: in terms of the combination of prestige of the brand, luxurious interior trim, driving performance, few people can compete with the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car.

Energy consumption and range of the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo

My city energy consumption was 25-27 kWh per 100 km, which promises us about 300 km of power reserve in the city. If you try to drive as economically and carefully as possible (but why then buy a Porsche?), you can achieve a consumption of about 20 kWh per 100 km – potentially a range of 400+ km in the city. If you drive as dynamically as possible, then the consumption exceeds 30 kWh – and this is already 250 km in the city. On the highway at a speed of 80-90 km / h, the consumption is 17-18 kWh per 100 km, at a speed of 110-120 km / h it increases to 24-25 kWh per 100 km of track. Let me remind you that the manufacturer for the 4S version promises a power reserve of 388-452 km according to the WLTP measuring cycle. I also note that the test drive took place at a good time – at the end of autumn; also consider the energy consumption for air conditioning (in summer) and interior heater (in winter).

The general warranty for the electric vehicle is two years without mileage limitation. There is also a separate battery warranty of eight years or 160,000 km. Service maintenance must be carried out every 30 thousand km or every 2 years. The minimum maintenance price is about UAH 4.9 thousand.

Prices for an electric car and service are indicated as of January, excluding additional discounts and promotions when buying or servicing. Service data are indicated for Kyiv, in other cities / regions, the price of maintenance may differ.

Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo safety

At the time of writing, there is no data on the passing of the Euro NCAP crash tests by the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car. But these tests passed the Porsche Taycan sedan – and received the maximum “5-star” rating. The main remarks are the increased load on the passenger’s chest in a frontal impact, and weak neck protection in a rear impact. But otherwise – high marks for the safety of adults and children, as well as good marks for the operation of various active safety systems.

What is a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car? This is a market phenomenon. The real “thing in itself” and “thing named after itself”. And the case when every word in these definitions is important. Firstly, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car is truly a “thing in itself”: an original body format, a real all-rounder for roads and destinations. Secondly, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo electric car is really a “thing named after itself”: its appearance and interior, its dynamics and ability to keep the road unconditionally confirm that we are facing a Porsche representative. Finally, thirdly, this is really a “thing”: maximum quality and a “premium” feeling, but without unnecessary distracting details. Add up the first, second, third and get the answer to the question of why the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo can be called a real phenomenon in the automotive and electric market of our time.
