It’s no secret that for more than a year, MediaTek has been ahead of Qualcomm in terms of shipments of chipsets for smartphones, taking 46% of the market in 2021. But it is much more interesting to find out which price category of devices accounts for the bulk of the chips of a particular brand. The answer to this question is offered by Counterpoint Research researchers. It turned out that the largest part of MediaTek’s products in 2021 was distributed in the price segment up to $499, and only smartphones up to $299 are clearly dominated by Qualcomm. This is mainly due to the popular Dimensity 700s and 800s series chips.
The mid-range device market ($300-499) is dominated by Qualcomm, helped by the Snapdragon 870, 720G, 750G and 778G chips. In the flagship segment, Samsung imposes serious competition on it, but in premium devices (from $ 800 and more), Qualcomm is still in the lead. By the way, the South Korean tech giant is suffering a decline in share on all fronts compared to the previous year. Last but not least, this is due to the expansion of the release of its own flagships of the Galaxy S and Galaxy Z series on Snapdragon chips instead of Exynos.
Separately, researchers note the success of UniSoC, which is demonstrating significant growth in the segment up to $200 in 2021: in the range of ultra-budget smartphones (up to $99), the company accounts for 26% of sales. It should also be noted that Google broke into the chipset market with Google Tensor and immediately took small shares in the flagship segment of devices from $500.
