Review of the Redmond RGM-M808P grill-oven: a master of steaks, and more

To date, Redmond offers the buyer more than ten models of SteakMaster series grills. These are pressure grills in a wide price range with different capabilities, controls, features and equipment. We will consider the 2020 model Redmond RGM-M808P, which the manufacturer positions as a powerful practical device that combines three devices: a grill, a barbecue brazier and a mini-oven.

* If it’s quite simple: this is the period during which parts for repairing the device are delivered to official service centers. After this period, any repair in the official SC (both warranty and paid) is unlikely to be possible.

Equipment

The grill arrived for testing in a colorfully designed cardboard box. Photos of the device, a brief description of the model, its technical characteristics and capabilities are printed on a black background. On the side is a link to a mobile application with a QR code, on top there is a plastic handle for easy carrying.

Opening the box, inside we found:

  • grill;
  • additional pallet;
  • two glasses for collecting fat;
  • instructions and recipe book.

The device and accessories are securely fixed in the box with foam inserts.

At first sight

The Redmond RGM-M808P grill is small and light enough. The body is made of stainless steel, the handle is bakelite. On the upper side, in addition to the advertising sticker, there is a large stamped inscription “Redmond steakmaster” and hints – pictograms.

The device can be opened by 180°; inside we see panels with a specially shaped non-stick coating with a chute for draining excess fat. The grill closes and opens easily, and in the closed position it can be fixed with a lever on the handle.

The same lever regulates the distance between the heating panels – in order to put an additional tray into the grill, you need to move the lever to position II.

To fix the panels in a fully expanded form, you need to press the red button located under the handle.

The RGM-M808P comes with a small square metal container – a baking sheet with a non-stick coating. You can cook food in it like in an oven. Even heating from above and below to 230 °C significantly reduces the cooking time.

The tray fits comfortably inside the grill.

To collect excess fat released during cooking, there are two containers that are suitable in height to the appliance. They are placed under a special groove located on both panels. In case the grill is closed, one is enough, and when the panels for the barbecue brazier are deployed, both cups are needed.

Behind the device we see a metal casing into which the wires are tucked.

From the bottom, the device is equipped with two retractable legs – stands and a sticker with the name, barcode and serial number of the device.

The legs extend when needed and provide a slight slope of the panels for better dripping of fat.

Instruction

Included with the appliance is a separate book of recipes specially selected for this grill, as well as a small instruction manual.

The recipe book is a colorful A5 brochure with a detailed description of 52 recipes and photos for them. It also contains general recommendations for cooking in this model. Some of the recipes were tested by us, the description is correct, it is not difficult to cook according to them.

The instruction manual is a very small book, in which, however, you can find all the useful information about the device, its technical characteristics, tips for operation, maintenance, as well as a list of common cooking errors and how to eliminate them. The font is small and well written.

Control

The device is controlled using the handle on the front of the bottom panel. The knob is turned clockwise from the “off” position to position 5, thus regulating the heating temperature of the panels. At position 1, the temperature corresponds to the defrosting mode, 5 – the maximum power for roasting steaks. Temperature control is smooth.

Exploitation

Before starting operation, the manufacturer recommends wiping the case with a damp cloth, washing the removable parts with warm water, thoroughly drying all the elements and conducting a heating cycle without products to remove technical protective grease. We did just that. It should be noted that the device did not emit any technical odors.

During operation, it turned out that in this model the temperature control knob is not very convenient due to slipping. In order to rotate it, it is better to use a dry non-slip cloth or other improvised means. With fingers, especially wet or greasy, it is very difficult to turn it. As an option, keep a rag nearby all the time, you can also wrap the handle with fabric electrical tape or a band-aid.

In addition to this error, we can’t say anything bad about this grill, no matter how hard we tried to find fault. The panels easily turn 180°, turning the grill into a BBQ. The protective non-stick coating is defect-free and perfectly copes with its functions. The baking sheet stands on the panel and is tightly closed with a lid. The heating of the panels, as tests have shown, is uniform and the same for the upper and lower panels. Like any kitchen device, this device requires some time to understand the optimal modes and processes occurring in it. After a couple of dishes made, you can optimize any suitable recipe and cook without any errors.

Note that in this grill, the meat is cooked really faster than in a pan or in a conventional oven. At the same time, the quality is not only not inferior, but even superior to meat cooked in the traditional way. So, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality and speed of roasted pork in a pan. It took us about an hour and a half for a piece of just under two kilos; in a conventional oven, the author would have taken about three hours to cook to the same state.

Care

Maintenance of the device is easy. It is recommended to wipe the housing with a damp cloth. Abrasive and aggressive products are prohibited for use.

The panels, unfortunately, are non-removable – but within this price category, it would even be strange to expect this.

The panels are cleaned after the end of the cooking process with wet towels or napkins. It is necessary to put a moistened napkin on the entire area of the panel, close the lid, after a while remove the napkin, and wipe the panels with a dry soft cloth or paper towel.

Our measurements

For 3 hours of continuous use, the grill consumed 4.7 kWh of electricity. The maximum power recorded by the device was 1760 watts.

practice tests

We have tested the RGM-M808P as a grill, mini oven and grill broiler. In all tests, the device performed well, despite a number of difficult challenges, such as thick large cuts of meat or the lack of oil in some recipes.

Pork neck with vegetable garnish

We took a large cut of chilled pork neck, cut it into thick, wide pieces. For garnish, we used eggplant, zucchini and bell pepper, cut into slices of the same thickness.

The meat was pre-marinated in a mixture of spices and sauce.

The meat was laid out on a grill heated to the maximum without oil, the lid was closed. When the strips from the grill panels became the desired condition, they turned the piece by 90 °, and roasted it. In order for a thick piece to be fried throughout the volume, but not burnt, after roasting the crust, we put thin slices of raw potatoes on top and bottom. Also, for even frying and protection from burning, you can use crumpled food foil.

Vegetables without pre-treatment were put on the grill, closed with a lid. After a few minutes, they turned 90 °, brought to readiness. Salted on a dish, sprinkled with herbs and spices, served as a side dish for grilled pork.

Result: excellent.

Grilled vegetables

From vegetables, we took large eggplants, zucchini, bell peppers. Cut into large pieces of the same thickness.

Without prior preparation, we put the vegetables on a heated grill (mode 4), closed the lid. A few minutes later, when the strips from the grill panels on the pieces turned dark, they turned the pieces 90 °, and fried until cooked. They put the vegetables on a dish, sprinkled with salt, herbs and spices.

Similarly cooked tomatoes, onions and thin slices of potatoes. The results were excellent in all cases.

Result: excellent.

Grilled pork ribs

For the dish, we needed a large cut of pork ribs and potatoes. The ribs were cut into large thick pieces so that each piece contained a bone. Rubbed with salt, garlic and spices, marinated in sauce for several hours.

Raw potatoes were cut into thin and wide slices as much as possible.

Lay out the ribs in a heated (mode 5) grill, close the lid. As soon as the top crust was fried and there was a risk that the meat would burn, thin slices of potatoes were laid out below and above the pieces, and the lid was closed. We kept the ribs on the grill until cooked, periodically changing the potato slices. The potatoes were fried, absorbing the fat from the ribs.

Thus, we immediately got both perfectly cooked meat and an excellent side dish.

Result: excellent.

Steak

We took a thin edge of ordinary chilled beef, as the pieces turned out to be uneven in width, the bone was cut off the meat from the bone.

We put it on a preheated grill (mode 5), closed the lid. After a few minutes, they turned 90 °, fried for a few more minutes. Removed to a plate, allowed to rest, sprinkled with salt and pepper.

Served with grilled vegetables, basil and spicy sauce.

Result: excellent.

Baked potatoes with meat

According to the recipe from the Redmond recipe book “potatoes with bacon”.

We took pork, potatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, green fenugreek and cheese. Everything was cut into cubes, sprinkled with spices and salt, laid out on a baking sheet, greased with butter, covered with slices of cheese. Top covered with foil, tucked the edges.

We put the baking sheet on a preheated grill (program 5), closed the lid. Cooked 30 minutes.

The potatoes were baked and became amazingly tender, the meat became soft. The approximate volume of a baking sheet is four full servings.

Result: excellent.

Waffles and cookies

We made dough for waffles from flour, butter, milk, powdered sugar and baking powder.

The recipe for the cookies was taken from the Redmond recipe book.

Wafers are perfectly evenly baked in a closed grill for several minutes, they are perfectly removed from the panels, they do not burn.

Cooking cookies also requires a minimum of effort and time. The only caveat is that the recipe indicates, in our opinion, an excess amount of baking powder, 30 g per 300 g of flour, we put half.

According to the test results, we can safely recommend this model for baking.

Result: excellent.

findings

We liked the Redmond RGM-M808P grill oven with good performance, ease of maintenance, the presence of three different full-fledged uses at once – as a standard pressure grill, as a mini-oven, as an open electric barbecue.

The heating speed of the panels is quite high, the grill keeps the temperature well, and can bake large pieces of meat. The non-stick coated plates and baking sheet significantly reduce the amount of oil when frying. The heating of the panels is uniform over the entire surface and the same for the top and bottom panels.

The device does not take up much space and can even replace a microwave or stove in the country – or be a good addition to them.

With all the ease of use, easy 180° opening, simplicity of retractable legs, convenient adjustment of the height of the panels, it should be noted an extremely inconvenient, sliding mode switch knob. Perhaps this is the only significant drawback of this model.

We can safely recommend this grill for purchase, as we believe that it copes with all tasks perfectly and, due to the absence of dubious “bells and whistles”, has an excellent balance of price and quality.
